kind of the same though ofr most actors in lotr; aragorn, legolas, merry, pippin and sam are perfect examples. i'd never heard of any of the actors except gandalf tbh

You must have heard of Sam from the goonies, thought everyone had seen the goonies :D

I knew a few of them, Sam , frodo of course, gandalf obviously and king theoden from the boys from the blackstuff in the 80s, liv Tyler obviously , Christopher lee of course, cate blanchett of course , Sean bean ,oh and I knew Andy serkis. The others though not really.

you say obviously too much as it's only obvious to you. no not seen goonies but maybe because of my age. also thought sam was a kid any way in goonies and if only film you can list is goonies which was way before lotr then my point still stands as it's the same as martin freeman.

Ok you're too young for the goonies , fair enough, you had surely heard of Christopher lee, Hugo weaving, Ian holm, maybe john rhys Davies, Sean bean, liv Tyler and cate blanchett though ?

yeah but we're losing the point here. i'd heard of Christopher lee only because of star wars and since then that's the only other film i've seen him with a decent part in, sean bean yep, liv tyler seen but not remember able until lotr, hugo from matrix and that's all.

my point was about martin making a big jump, however it's similar to what a lot of the main actors would have had from lotr, although they've done stuff which was ok, plenty had done nothing at all (orlando and dom iirc) or nothing as big.

Well we'll see how he does, one thing that those other actors and actresses had as an advantage was that they had done movies before, often big movies, some blockbuster and often with them in the lead role. Martin freeman hasn't really had that, being mainly a tv actor, which is where my big jump bit comes in, from tv actor to lead role in a major Hollywood backed blockbuster. He does have bilbo like qualities though.

I quite like Martin Freeman.

Really excited; Can Jackson live up to the Lord of the Rings? Can Freeman step up? Will it look good? DRAGON! :D Gollum! Dwarfs! Gandalf! :D

eeee excited. Shall re read the book at some point!

lol Kids eh, Look him up on imdb or something.

I stayed in a hotel once that Christopher Lee was staying in and I swear to god i couldnt stop looking at him in the reastraunt. Just drinking red wine he looked so freaky (least ti hope it was wine)

Was expecting to see him checking out with a hourse and cart with a cofin in the back!

so you saying you think this is different for say orlando bloom who iirc hadn't even graduated from uni when he got lotr, it was his first film and a hell of a big one. simialr to many others in lotr. i think it's unfair to say that some of the main actors in lotr wouldn't have experienced a similar if not bigger jump from being no one to someone big over night.

i know of martin freeman and have known of him for about 7 years (since the office). i never heard of orlando bloom, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen before lotr etc

this has really lost it's point now any way

If its lost its point, then why continue it? Or are you one of those people who simple has to have the last say?

My point was that for such major role its more of a gamble to use a lesser experienced actor than an experienced one. Which strikes me as a valid observation and common sense, its a gamble which may pay off or may not , I haven't said it won't pay off just that we will have to wait and see, which again seems like a valid viewpoint. I also just said that its a big jump up in terms of role for Freeman , which also seems like a valid viewpoint as a huge Hollywood blockbuster must surely be considered a jump up from his work to date. A jump up which he might handle and might not, again we will have to wait and see, which again seems like a valid attitude to take.

I've really got no idea why you are getting so irritable and defensive about the whole thing.

tbh i'm really not getting defensive and irritable. it may come across that way (which is also how you've come across from your last post) but it isn't how i feel. when someone said it is a big jump for such a small actor i didn't even mean to come across as i was disagreeing, just that this is what a lot of actors from lotr would have had too if not bigger. it was when someone seemed as though they were against what i said so i was continuing it.

the reason to continue even though it's lost it's point is because i don't mind the debate. i wasn't getting annoyed of angry so no reason to stop.

Oh well I'm certainly not against Freeman in the role, as I said I think he has some Bilbo-like qualities.

(If I came across as irritable its because I am an irritable person, especially when it comes to other people as most I encounter really need to be eliminated from the surface of the planet :D )

I'm genuinely excited about this release! Although I feel Freeman is a competant and experienced actor in many genres, I wouldn't look to negatively comment on his 'suitability' until I've seen the final product :)
