So feet on the ground then? Lots of people are criticising us for getting involved from the air in what is now a rebel war in Libya, and you think it would be a good idea to put our forces on the ground in another one?

No chance.

It is the only way to stop people killing each other. Either do it properly or not at all.

Not at all then for me. Anyway, I suspect this will all be over within a few days, seems like its coming to a head. Any UN resolution will come too late.

Go the UN and get a mandate to intervene in order to stop the humanitarian crisis?

Quite.

Libya is a militia based armed revolution.

In ivory coast the Democratically elected leader is being blocked from taking rightful power. And despite the UN already having feet on the ground. It really is disgusting.

Remember the UN had feet on the ground in Bosnia and did not intervene when one of the militias rounded up civilians for a bit of ethnic cleansing.

theres a huge difference between ivory coast and libya...

they should just assasinate the guy refusing to give up power.. stick some special forces team in with a sniper rifle or just drop a cruise missile on his ass

quickest way to stop all the ivory coast madness, just kill anyone who tries to be in power when they havent bene elected , probably only take 1 death

You are assuming, of course that any election was conducted fairly, evryone who had the right to vote was able and the count was done fairly and accurately.

That excludes a lot of African elections for a start.

Well the UN was there to help the process and ensure that it was fair.

What kind of precedent do we set by telling the world that they must become Democratic and then send peacekeeping forces in to ensure the votes and then ... well your on your own? We will impose democracy as a system, but we wont enforce the result.

How can that be right?

Its interesting to note the ivory coast situation continues to deteriorate as I mentioned much earlier in the thread and that even with UN eyes and feet on the ground as witnesses - and we still do nothing despite possibly 1000 dead.

Ah we are doing something, withdrawing UN staff ad it's no longer safe. How do the politicians get away with such lies and scandal? I just don't get it.
Satisfied?

The UN has threatened air attacks on forces loyal to besieged Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo after 11 peacekeepers were shot in recent days.

It is a start, now what about the other countries where nothing is being done?

Bahrain, Yemen, Saudi Arabia.

Today also have a story about Mossad snatching a man from the Ukraine, you will not here a peep of condemnation for that.

sounds like the peacekeepers are stuck in a bunker and bgapoe whatever has cut off water and surounded their base with snipers :O

nevermind that though gaddafi is the evil one with the oil.....

Yea i would have been satisfied if they had gone in and sorted it out 6 months ago when this all began...

And are thery going in because of the regime change or simply because the 11 UN peacekeepers were shot?!

honestly it makes me sick.

From the statement by the UN rep it appears that the crime was attacking the UN soldiers. Which means, like Libya they couldn't give a XXXX about the ordinary people.

The same could be said about when Israel bombed the **** out of Palestinians in 2008, where was the no fly zone to protect civilians then? what about when Saakashvili of Georgia who is still considered a close ally by the west launched an artillery attack on South Ossetia and Abkhazia? there's one rule for our allies and another for our enemies.

It's very interesting to see that the poll results have shifted from the original standpoint. Quite a lot more than half of the votes were "No" in the first week of action.
