If HL3 is going to be released any time soon, it will probably be tied in with the launch of the steam box. But who knows how valve time operates.

I doubt they'd do it as a big event, it'd most likely be an ARG which would involve the whole community, that drives up hype like crazy.

Imagine tomorrow a time pops up on their site like for Portal 2... everyone goes mental getting really excited etc... And then:

This exactly, they have no need to advertise in a traditional sense.

Heck, they could just drop it on the store and the internet would implode.

I don't think CM will work at the moment, now that HL2 and the episodes have been updated to Valve's new file format. Seems the CM guy is working on a replacement though.
 
Is anyone else having issues with Half Life 2 after the update? I played it to get those trading card things, but when I'm playing the game tends to freeze up randomly for 10 - 20 seconds at a time, then carries on as normal. Never used to do that...
 
It's a clue!

One pixel changes colour each time it "freezes". If you record the first letter of all the colours, arrange them into a square which you can then use a Caeser's Box on to decode the launch date of the ARG for HL4.
 
I'm guessing they're making a new game engine. To release HL3 on the source engine would be a far bigger troll :D
 
Surgeon Simulator has just gone on daily sale today on steam with 33% off...

Do you think that's what the clue was referring too or is that just a coincidence?? or another clue??
 
Nothing major has come out of valve for a while now. They must be happy with the money from hosting games on the download service. I don't see them as an innovative company any longer. After playing the half life series so far, the time delay has meant I have no interest in playing their latest instalment if it actually exists. Indeed, I feel pointless if they release it soon as the mainstream audience will not be interested at all and everyone has forgotten about it. It's all about gta 5 etc at the moment
 
A few of my thoughts on HL3 are:

From a franchise perspective there's something I've been saying for years; they've written themselves into a corner/don't actually know where to take the story.

From a technical point of view I have a feeling that they're waiting for something that can be groundbreaking. HL1 had it's set pieces and HL2 had proper physics. Both of these are now staples for FPS games.

With the recent patching of TF2 for the occulus rift we could be looking at a game built for virtual reality. Unlikely due to the hardware requirements though, perhaps some other breakthrough instead.

Based on nothing, just ramblings.
 
It'll be made and released once Source 2 is finished. As always making a new engine takes longer than simply making a game, hence the wait, no doubt L4D3 etc will be created around the same time using Source 2.

That's what it seems like to me anyway...
