Any delivery drivers for takeaway places roam this forum ? I'm thinking of taking it up for a while ( have a holiday next month and with sales and what not on here i spent all my money! ) Was just wondering how much you guys earn roughly, and what its really like as a job for extra income ? It isn't as bad as its made out to me to be.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Good luck earning anything of substance from doing that. By the time you pay your driving costs it's pointless..... Especially the insurance. Not that I know any who actually pay for the correct insurance of course.... (those covered by block policies e.g Dominos excluded).

Used to do delivery work a while back, Chippys and chineeses pay cash in hand most of the time, £20 quid a night (5-6 hours), payments per delivery vary but most paid £1 per local deliery to £2.50 for a 15-20 mile round trip. Can earn around £20 to £50 a night depending how busy.

Domino's, Minimum wage, 75p a delivery, maybe a quid but thats for a 10+ mile round trip.

Your car gets wrecked from speed humps and town driving and will need a service at least twice a year. My fuel costs were anything from £5-£20 a night plus you will do 50-100 miles a night, Maybe more depending how busy and your local area.
I wouldn't do either ever again.

If you really want the job, the best way to do it is don't turn up at the stated interview time, wait at least 20-30mins then ring them up and tell them you can't find the address, ask for directions, ignore the directions but tell them everything is OK, you're on your way and will be with them in 5 minutes, ignore any incoming calls from now on and wait another 20-30mins and ring again asking them to meet you at a local landmark close to their address. Job will be yours.

At the pizza shop I worked in as a teenager there were quite a few drivers but this place was very popular. The shop paid them £5 per hour, they got a minimum £1 per delivery but Thur-Sun you'd have people blocked giving quite generous tips so they were pulling minimum £40 a night. It really depends on the takeaway, if they're popular you can make some coin if not then don't expect much.

I can't say I've ever tipped a delivery driver and I certainly don't think I'm the only one.

Didn't realise these guys got paid so little though.

depends on how busy it is, local one near me is that busy some nights there is 3 drivers and each do up 40 - 45 drops a night each!. paid £40 plus any tips. infact one lad left to get a proper job and left and went back to delivering for the same takeaway as he as earning more dropping of Chinese food!

Me neither. It's shocking.

Getting pretty fed up with places paying so little that the job is little more than glorified begging.

Trouble is....!

There is always somebody out there who is prepared to accept lower wages!

(Free Market and all that)

Isn't "Globalization" wonderful! makes us all better off!

Erm :/

Done it for a while when I was in my old job, I used to use their Diesel card for the fuel though so I didn't pay for fuel.. they never did catch on, don't tell anyone though!

Money wasn't great but I was younger at the time and my and a ex used to fly around doing it.

Globalisation doesn't really affect the wages of takeaway delivery drivers. At least not until Chinese-manufactured drones operated by US Silicon Valley startups start doing it.

What a technique! That should definitely be put into practice. ;)

Completely depends on your car tbh - anything that's not quite economical will cost more than you make!

That being said, I used to do Domino's deliveries 4 nights a week, and made an extra ~£100/week after tax.

My increase in servicing/maintenance costs on the car was negligible, as I was doing ~30k in my normal job anyway, so obviously my situation was slightly different, but do the maths and figure it out.

I'd probably advise against the chinese/indian/chippy places, as stories I've heard they are usually keen to mess you about. Unless of course you can find an honest place.

I used to deliver for Papa John's when I was at uni. Minimum wage + £1 per delivery + tips. Weekends are when you make your money on tips. However I used their little smart car, as £1 per delivery doesn't really make you anything if you take into consideration the delivery area the place will cover. And with petrol prices now compared to when I did the job, it's even worse!

Easiest money I've ever made though, there was nothing hard or stressful about the job. Just drive quick though ;) (better tips)

It's alright because it's easy to get, super easy to do and you do make SOME money (better than none). I work for one of the big pizza chains and as mentioned above I get £1 per delivery, minimum wage and tips sometimes. In my octavia vRS I just about break even on fuel in my area with the mix of short and long journeys @ 27mpg. I contemplated the idea of doing it for a Chinese place before, but they were more hassle than they were worth (phoning me at 1am for example). I think it would be better as an "extra" job like you're going for, rather than relying on it for all your money.

It can't be paying that well in my area, as every time I get it delivered it's a new guy who's just started. Usually with GF in passenger seat, oh what a fun evening that must be.

I've considered this in the past but always assumed you made next to no money. Seems I was right. A shame really because it does seem like a nice easy way of making money on the side.

I've done delivery work for a few places. It's one of those things you'll do for a while then give up and never do again.

Delivered for a chinese got £12 for a 4 hour shift + delivery charges which ranged from £1-£4 + tips. Lucky to come out with £20-£25 a night after petrol and could do between 60 and 90 miles a night. Also if it is a quiet night, you could end up going out with 1 delivery for 7 miles away which will eat into your overall 'profit' for the night. It's best to go out with 4 or 5 deliveries at once all en-route to each other for maximum pay.

I did one night at another chinese, did about 100 miles and came home with about £10 after petrol. Didn't go back for second shift.

I still do the odd delivery night for a pizza/kebab shop, £15 for 5 hour shift + delivery charges + tips. Most deliveries are in the same town so under 3 mile round trip. Can usually make a clear £30 a night but I only do it once a week or even fortnight now when they are stuck for drivers/busy.

Obviously if you did it all above board with with food delivery insurance you would be out of pocket. Only the big chains put you on the books and pay proper wage.

You got to think of it as a way of making some extra money in your spare time rather than thinking of it as a job trying to beat the NMW.
