Dell laptop catches fire at Yahoo research building

You should see the battery on my mates powerbook, it has become huge and has a big bulge in the side, looks like it is going to explode!! I assume he is getting it replaced. :)

Damn didn't notice your post. It has ballooned, stop using the battery/laptop now. Take it out of the laptop, put it in a deep ceramic bowl away from anything that could catch alight. This is very close to exploding like in the video I posted. Also I would suggest you put salt water in the bowl too, this will slowly discharge it to make it safer.

It is out and it kept growing!!! Will not fit back in now,

don't blame Sony, blame Dell, it might be Sonys battery but Dell are responsible for it. Dell can kick off with Sony.

Ordered mine the day the recall was announced... still don't have my replacement :( Pretty spectacular when they go boom! :

Sony make the batteries to the capacity and shape asked for by other companies.
Sony are the ones responsible for ensuring that the battery is safe to use, and the internal design of it (including the normal safety features present in such batteries).

Hence Sony are the ones people should really be annoyed with, Dell and co are simply recalling a part they used in their systems that now appears to have a dangerous part.

P.S.
If you're serious about your mates battery I would strongly advise him to stop using it, now.

iamgud,

The reason why it has gotten larger is because there is now a buildup of gasses inside the cell. Now whatever you do, don't decide to pierce the cell to let the gas out, this will mean that instead of gas coming out through the hole, you will have a flame of ignited gas come shooting out at a great velocity. Best way is to get rid of as much internal energy the cell has.

Should have got it by now, at work we had only one that needed to be reaplced . That was found out about a week after the recall annouced and we contacted dell to send a replacement.
We got it last week so, i may be wanting to contact them if i was you, just to chase it up. But considering how many of them there must be to replace

LOL. No it won't.
If you pierce it you will get covered in battery acid though and it'll stink.

I see Fujitsu are also now recalling batteries, I don't know if they are Sony made or not. I think a test house somewhere is in deep trouble though.

Getting Lithium based batteries tested in the UK is a problem, most test houses (including the one I work in) will no longer test these batteries as we've all had some interesting experiences with lithium cells during type approval for one company / product or another.
