Dell S2716DG vs ViewSonic XG2703-GS

Not every VA is good and not all TN's are bad but its still limited by limits of TN tech.

A good VA is far better than any TN full stop and any IPS for black and Contrast ratio so more shadow details.

Also make sure the VA is actually a real VA not AHVA (sometimes tagged as IPS-Like Panel).

VA's aren't great for motion - you have some "boosted" panels that try to emphasise VA's good bits (ultra fast bright transitions) and mask the smeary black transitions which often look good superficially but when you actually spend time using them a lot of people start to notice where they aren't so great for fast paced stuff.

It sucks really as about 70% of the time VAs are a lot better than TN for gaming but that other ~30% really drags them down.

Well next gen Acer Predators and Asus Rogs are 200HZ VA panels and IMO the 2nd gen after the initial TN's should have been and not the current poor QA IPS AUO panels.

They need Sharps VA panels like the amazing Eizo Foris FDF2405W had

You made a very good point on the other page regarding the colour "reds" and an IPS panel. But not only can that apply when being viewed as the differences to a TN panel but it was very apparent to me when I unplugged my 1440p BenQ IPS designer monitor (in sRGB mode) and plugged in the Samsung 34" UW VA panel screen.
Opening UCUK front page and seeing the deep reds that I was used to seeing on the IPS screen were a disappointment on the VA panel, they were far less deep and vivid. No matter how much I tried to boost or enhance with the various modes, overly sharpened the image and led to font issues, or used custom settings I decided that for me a good IPS is more suited to my needs and expectations over that of either a TN or VA panel. The detail lost in the blacks of the VA panel became more apparent when I changed to a two monitor setup and had the BenQ next to the VA panel Samsung.

Each to their own as to how you priorities your needs and hopefully the pluses will negate the shortfalls of the panel type you choose, a pity tho that it is still very much down to a lottery of getting a keeper.

I went through 6 before getting a good one

Was that 6 panels in a row before you got a keeper...?!

Is it possible to say where you got them from..? I'm a little wary of ordering another to try after having little success with my test of a VA panel Samsung UW at 34" or a 32" 4k which was faulty, as are most 32" 4k panels which use an Optronics panel.

Had a student discount for Amazon a while back, so ordered the monitor from there. Amazon just said they'd refund me, but I wanted a monitor. Asus only replace with refurbished monitors, but the process is very quick (around 2 day turnaround - they pickup your old one and replace there and then). However, they clearly have a warehouse full of sub par ones as I received the same monitor twice at one point (same serial number when putting it into their RMA site).

I finally got a good one, and sold it because it was more hassle than it was worth (I couldn't return to Amazon at this point). I got a call from the chap a couple of months after saying it had just stopped working, and asked me to sort out the return (I had given him a list of everything he needs to do in case of a return, with my original proof of purchase). I said if I get time I'll help out, but I'm in 9-6 most days at uni (except weds). He started ringing me every day asking if I'd done it yet, even calling from different numbers. Just blocked him in the end!

Anyway, back to original topic.

Monitor situation is in quite a poor state at the moment. You have to spend a lot on a professional monitor to get it defect free. Stuff like BenQ's pro series, maybe Asus' pro series (my PB278Q I still have doesn't have any backlight bleed).

Dell's customer service, from experience, is abysmal. If you're going to buy a monitor from them, get it direct, or you get a poorer quality of service from them.

It's why I haven't bought a new monitor. I don't have the time to go through the hassle of returning it every few days. Problem is I may have to - mine is on its last legs.
