Hi

Could anybody please help, I have a Dell U2711 and a ATI 5870 connected with a DisplayPort lead on windows 7 64bit But the max resolution I can get is 1920x1200 and it says recommended next to it. I have updated video drivers but still the same.

Any Help would be really appreciated

:)

u need to use a dual link dvi cable to use the monitor at full res the one that comes with the monitor to run it at 2560x1440

Thanks for the reply but have no clue where that's gone that's why I was trying the DisplayPort lead I was told that would do the job ...oh well :(

Thanks for the reply mate its like you said there must a problem somewhere else but what not a clue. I have tried duel dvi and display port and its the same, I did have a dual screen setup running ultramon but have removed all the software.

Have you tried forcing the resolution in the registry (you'll need to boot in to safe mode to update it, then back to normal)?

... you would need to find the DL DVI that came in the box first though, just in case forcing the resolution won't output through the cable.

No you don't... displayport works fine... even my work laptop can power 2560x1440 by displayport.

im sure i read you had to ah well in that case thats one thing out the way then

this is what i read i think, it was relating to a mini display port maximum res being 1920x1200 apparently so assumed you had to use dual link dvi cable to get 256o x 1440

If a Mini Display Port adapter is utilized on either a U2711 or U3011 flat panel display this may cause jitter if the resolution is set to anything greater than 1920x1200. That's because the maximum resolution capable for Mini Display Port adapters is 1920x1200. In order to resolve this you will need to purchase a Mini Display Port to Display Port cable in order to use any resolution greater than 1920x1200.

just rechecked and found this also

Mini DisplayPort is capable of driving resolutions up to 2560×1600

so what is right ?

Interesting.

I haven't tried mini displayport... the disparity between converter and dedicated cable is interesting. Sounds like an issue with the converters, rather than the port itself.

My work laptop has a full size displayport connector, so is using the cable that was included with the monitor.

Yeah, don't doubt that... the ACD would be useless without the support (albeit now thunderbolt, i believe?) it sounds from the information posted above that the issue is related to the U2711 & mini->full size adapters... but a mini->full size cable can get round it.

it made me think that to run at full res u had to use dual link dvi so my bad i use the cable that came with the dell dual link dvi and havnet tried others personally may go home and have a fiddle later and see what happens out of interest

My guess is you're using the mini HDMI port rather than the mini DP - they look very similar.

If you go DVI you will need a dual link cable as supplied with the monitor. Also beware some cards only support dual link on a specific DVI port if it has more than one.

MDP is capable of it, as the TB displays are 2560x1440 and they go straight into a MacBook Pro.

But, if you use one of the adapter to go from DVI to MDP you have to have a dual link MDP adapter to do that or you'll be limited to the lower resolutions again. Apple sell one for about £70.. but if you are using straight up DP it should be fine. The graphics drivers could be have an effect if they arent updated as well. Have you tried the panel on another system to see if the issue follows it?

edit: also the reason for the adapters not going to full res is because the MDP to DVI is a passive adapter, the MDP to VGA and dual link DVI are active, hence the possibility for increased res.

Mini-DisplayPort can do up to 2560x1600 the same as normal DisplayPort, it's all about the revision or version number with 1.2 being the latest with most available bandwidth.

Make sure the adapter is "Dual-Link active" like this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-000-SR if you're using DVI on the monitor or get a mDP to DP CABLE not adapter.
