Im thinking of getting a flat screen monitor when I finaly replace my 5 year old gaming pc and would like to know If anyone could def recomend 1 screen over the other.

Is there ghosting with either monitor?

Does the 120Hz Realy make that much of a difference for gaming?

Sorry if this is similar to other posts Im just wondering if its worth shelling out the extra cash.

As an overall monitor, I would recommend the Dell by a country mile. It uses a better panel technology (eIPS) compared to the TN in the Samsung. It has fantastic image quality and viewing angles compared to the samsung and comes with dell's lovely 3 year "next working day replacement" program and a "premium pixel guarantee".

However, for purely gaming, the Samsung is probably the better screen. This is mainly due to the 120Hz technlogy which makes gaming very similar to on a CRT and you are able to make use of Nvidia's (rather good actually) 3D vision technology.

Neither monitor has any noticeable ghosting or input lag.

Therefore, if you think the gaming benefits of the samsung beat the general use benefits on the dell, then definitely get the samsung. However, I would (and did) pick the dell and I am very happy I did.

Thankies for the feedback. :)

Im getting the impression that the Dell seems to be the best value for money atm and must admit some of the reviews do say it has a realy solid base.

I tried a few flat screens years ago when they were out and most of the bases were so bad that I was in constant worry of the screen keeling over on its own.

Hehe, just spreading the good word :D

How is you monitor doing? I'm sure the OP would be grateful of any feedback you have about your shiny new 2209WA.
So far so good, still at work so not much real testing done. Build quality is first class, it looks flippin' lovely! Assembly is child's play, and first impressions on the panel are good. Rest assured I'll post my more detailed findings at home later...!

cmndr_andi

i took your recommendation on the dell from another thread - i'm not a gamer just normal web and videos and "work" whatever that is

well impressed - its well solid , proper build quality - very pleased

thanks for sharing your info on the board

Thanks for creating this thread. I've been considering these exact 2 monitors too. I already own an NEC 24WMGX3, but although it's fantastic for most things, the ghosting whilst gaming really does my head in at times.

Therefore I'm planning to get another screen to sit next door and use just for gaming. I guess in a way the SM2233RZ is the obvious choice for a pure gaming screen, but I can't ignore the cheaper price and higher quality eIPS panel in the 2209WA. The question is, does the eIPS panel in the 2209WA ghost at all? Really can't decide

Really not noticed any ghosting on my 2209WA, dunno if I notice that kind of thing particularly. I did look and can't see any so mine is great for games - fast FPS in my case...

The question is, does the eIPS panel in the 2209WA ghost at all?

It's a very relative and subjective issue - that said the general consensus is that this is an excellent all round monitor that caters for most requirements - not least the gamer.

Read Credo's thread - link - where cmndr_andi and i team tag Credo and finally beat him into submission with numerous facts and reviews about the 2209WA. That thread will probably allay any doubts that you may have about purchasing the DELL.

Thanks for the advice and links Plec. I think I'll probably end up going for the 2209WA as my 'gaming' screen. I was thinking of getting a 24" TN panel to do the job but I just think you get more bang for buck from the higher quality IPS panel in the 2209WA.

I was a bit concerned it might look odd next to my NEC 24WMGX3 size wise and also that I may find it a bit small for general use, but then I'll only use it for gaming anyway and I honestly don't think you really need more than 22" when you're face is 12" from the screen anyway! Plus I've already got the NEC which I will use for normal desktop use. The NEC really is a superb monitor (it cost enough at the time!) for photo editing, surfing and general windows usage, but it just doesn't cut it as a gaming screen for FPS.

No worries – I hope it helped.

I can understand your reluctance in buying a TN Panel as a second monitor, even for gaming, when you’re use to the quality of the NEC 24WMGX3 (very nice monitor I might add.).

The difference in quality would be very telling with the two monitors side by side - especially if you were to jump straight from using the NEC 24WMGX3 to that of a TN panel for gaming.

Hopefully, the DELL will be a great compromise – it certainly should cope better with gaming than the NEC 24WMGX3 and hopefully the e-IPS panel’s quality will still stand up to that of the NEC.

Absolutely - I actually owned an NEC 20WGX2 prior to this one, which had a fantastic IPS panel but it broke down :(

It'll be interesting to see the Dell next to my NEC 24WMGX3 as you say. I'm sure it'll look good, even compared to the NEC. You make me feel less guilty by splashing out on another TFT with every post! hehe :)

I think it depends how fussy you are when it comes to gaming. Do you come from a CRT or an LCD?
I came from CRTs playing fast twitch shooter games like UT99.
There is not a chance I would EVER have gone to a 60hz panel, the difference to me is absolutely astonishing and can't believe people can game on 60hz. But with these sort of thing it's in the eye of the beholder and ideally you should try and find a way to try both :)
I went with the Viewsonic 120hz LCD, and after initial disappointment that even with 120hz I could notice SLIGHT blur, I am now really happy with my bigger, clearer display than my old CRT, despite the LCD technology short comings.

I actually come from gaming on a CRT to the NEC20WGX2 and now to the NEC 24WMGX3. The 20WGX2 was great for gaming, even at 60Hz. Obviously the refresh rate of 60Hz gives you 60fps which is decent, although I do agree 120Hz & I presume 120fps is even better. So the refresh rate would be better yes, but I'm not sure 120Hz improves pixel response time in terms of ghosting does it? It just gives you more 'frames per second' I guess?

It just bugs me to pay an extra £50-£60 for a 120Hz TN panel over an IPS.
