Dell Vostro 1500

its negligable, 3mb is generally reguarded as perfectl acceptable, the only real differences seen are in encoding/rendering scenarios and even then its not going to be a massive difference, as 3mb is adequate size, theres currently a lot of debate about cache size in CPU forums etc but it doesnt make THAT much difference, a laptop is hardly the best render rig/encoding rig is it.

Yea I got mine to do some 3d-modelling etc but since changed my idea, figured id get a proper graphics solution in it since id like to do some light gaming, the most mine gets pushed into doing is pes08(well it used to) source engine, cs1.6 or warcraft3, if im really bored i might go on cod4.

Fiar enough, definately doesn't sound like it's worth an extra £100.

Now to try and persuade Dell to let me get a Vostro on finance without me being a business customer.

Bit of an insight in to how the Vostro handles games - My mate had a copy of the Assassins Creed beta (ahem....yes quite), so i installed it on my Vostro to see if it would run. Runs great on both Dx 9 and 10 despite it apparently failing the minimum cpu requirement. Dx10 is stunning but a bit chuggy at medium settings, Dx 9 can be turned up pretty high and is very playable (1280x800 8600GT) .. and the game is excellent! Hurry up and release it Ubisoft!

OK call me Mr Thicko Thick but....
I want to do a fresh install of vista on my vostro but got instantly lost...
1. Can I use the drivers on the CDs that came with it on the reinstall?
2. Do I choose the internet vista (connected to internet) update option on install?
3. How do I get rid of the partitions on the hard drive?
4. How do I reboot from the DVD?

I might not bother as usually when I mess with things they never go back to how they were...is it really worth it? Laptop is only five hours old!

1. You can yes, but wouldn't advise it. You're better off getting all the latest drivers that you need from the Dell support website.
2. Not sure what you mean there - best method of re-installing Vista would be to boot with machine with the Vista disc in the drive, then wipe the OS partition clean (format it) from the Vista setup, and then let the installation continue.
3. As above - in the Vista installation setup
4. Should just be a case of having the disc in and starting the machine up. If not, check the BIOS for the relevant option.

Whether it's worth it or not depends on how much pre-installed crap the machine came with, really. My XPS had a fair bit, so it got a clean install and was much quicker. Don't know if the Vostros are shipped with as much bloat though. Probably still worth getting the latest drivers from the Dell website though.

Weird, I didn't have to enter a company reg number when I ordered just yesterday, and I don't have any sort of business account. Maybe you clicked the 'VAT exempt' box or something.

For company name I just used my website name, even though it's not a business at all.

My order has gone to 'your order is being prepared for shipping' (phase 4) just 24 hrs after ordering. Is this normal or does it mean I could have it much earlier than the 30/03 estimate?

edit:...and now dispatched, about 30 hrs after ordering, woohoo! :D Probably won't get it till tuesday though with bank holidays.

Guys Im having issues with my Bluetooth receiver. I have the driver installed and the unit enabled in the bios and when I flick the wireless/bluetooth switch a dialogue pops up saying hit Fn+F2 keys to activate bluetooth, except this doesnt work :( Help?

You can definitely order one because I've done it, but whether at some point down the line when you need the warranty they may ask for some proof, who knows. I didn't see anything on the Dell site that said Vostros were only for registered companies though.

edit: I did pay VAT btw.

Well, I've just ordered a 1700 and put in a fake company name.. there's nothing that says you have to be a registered company, but there is an option to declare yourself VAT free..

so just to confirm you can purchase these without proof of being a small business?

And does anyone know if these can be shipped to a different address than the billing address?

Thanks
Yes you can, you can't claim for vat though unless you have a small business that meets the requirements.

I think you can ship them to a different address to the billing address. (My delivery and billing address are different)

Ok thanks for that, hooray I should be able to order one soon then :D

This is the spec that I'm looking at:

T8300 (2.40 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® XP Professional - English
3072MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (1x1024 + 1x2048 MB)
256MB nVidia® GeForce® 8600M GT
320 GB (5.400rpm) SATA Hard Drive

All that for £580.45 including VAT! One thing I haven't looked at is the option for bluetooth. I've never really thought about it. Is it only good for transferring stuff from your phone without a cable? No idea how much extra this would cost (not much I'd imagine). I'm just wondering if its worth getting for future use.
