It is nowhere near as frustrating as he makes out, especially once you get used to dying, the souls you might lose early on and get upset over are insignificant compared to what you will be prepared to throw away later on. You just need to bank them as stats whenever you can and don't worry about it, spending heroes/soldiers souls to bump you up to the next level when you are short helps as well.

edit: My most pathetic soul loss (though not the highest by a long ways) was just at the start of 2-2, I was killing the firebugs to farm dragonstone and stepped out too far when checking a corpse, *bam* dead, restarted, went down the left hand side, locked onto the minister in the lift room, rolled to avoid his fireball....straight down the lift shaft.

I'm so very tempted by this game, but after seeing Yahtzee's review I know I'd get far too frustrated to get anywhere near finishing it.

If you were to follow his reviews you'd have the smallest game collection the world has ever seen, consisting of Portal and thats about it.

When you die you don't get your body back by going to where you died last. You can only pick up the souls you lost from there but you'll stay in soul form.

Dying is completely normal and soul form is a large part of the game. About 80% of first playthroughs are in soul form. You hit harder, and have stealthy movement (you don't make any noises at all). Two major advantages over body form.

By any chance was the guy at the end of the bridge a knight with red eyes tsinc80697?

Not sure about red eyes. It was only wide enough to get past him by killing him. I got to it by going as high as I could on the first part and there was a choice of going through fog or going in a different direction, killing 2 guys with bow/arrow and then I came across the bridge guy that whooped me!

How can I tell when I am in soul form? When I died and went back to the start of the level I had to re-kill everything and I looked the same, unlike the other white ghosts I see running past all the time?

Oh, and in the Tutorial part I got mullered by a BIG thing, is this what is meant to happen or is there a different outcome if I had killed him?

Yeah you're supposed to die. You're most likely in soul form right now - your health bar is cut in 50% (you can see half of it shaded in grey) and you don't make any audible footsteps and the like. When you started the game properly, in front of the palace castle, you're in soul form. You can only get your body back by killing a boss demon, or using a stone of ephemeral eyes (a somewhat rare item you loot off random dead bodies dotted around), or using a black stone to invade another player's world and killing him.

The white ghosts are other players, in their own games. It's just a nice little quirk that shows how active the game is.

It definitely sounds like you met mister Red Eyes. You can't beat him until you're a much higher level. Some of the inhabitants of Demons' Souls will kill you so you should pick your fights wisely and flee if it's not going your way :)

Thanks! Just found a wiki and having a quick read to learn more about the game. It was the Red Eye Knight and I think I will stay away for now! Got him to half health but I'll get him later :p

The game is good so far, just a steep learning curve to what everything is and does. Loving it so far though :) Love the blood stains and ghosts running around though!

Seems to be quite a few places you need to fall/jump off from to get hidden items, knowing me I'll fall to my death several times!

I lost my save game for this but every time I read about playing it I get all eager to play just don't think I can play through everything I had already done.

In reality it will probably go much smoother this time round but who knows.

Nailed the first boss last night! EXtremely easy, considering the amount of times I died during the level I thought I was going to struggle!

Silly question but does 1-2 start by going through the gate behind the boss or back to the Nexus? Are the first parts in all worlds the same difficulty or do you need to play through 1st one to get to 2nd etc

1-2 starts in the area behind the boss. Always go back to the nexus after a boss and spend your balance of souls on upgrading your stats. Keep the soldier and hero souls so you can top up your souls if you find yourself just short of a soul level, as you keep them when you die it's a nice "bank". Similarly do not spend the bosses soul, keep it, they can be used to get spells / create weapons later on.

Different 1s are different difficulty dependant on your character but you lose nothing by trying them out provided you've spent your souls. It is worth warning that 1-2 is especially awkward for certain character types and you cannot progress past 1-2 till you have fully completed another world anyway.

Thanks! How can I upgrade my stats? Only found the blacksmith in the Nexus I've been told to go up to the top before I go elsewhere!

Yeah go see the monumental (one of the statue/people in the large balcony) then iirc the maiden in black will allow you to upgrade your stats (it's been so long since my first playthrough I've almost forgotten).

I was the other way around I think, about 80% of my first playthrough was in body form. On my NG+ and I've probably spent about 95% of the time in body form. I think my 180 hours of Ninja Gaiden conditioned me for games like this :D
