I'm thinking of upgrading my Audio Technica ATH A900 cans. I like these cans a lot - but the trouble is, they do lack a strong punchy bass. So I might sell them on.. I used to have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's.

Does anybody own a pair of Denon AH-D2000's? Does anybody have any other suggestions around the £150-£200 mark?

For headphone I prefer closed back cans, I don't really like open cans so that limits my options somewhat.

The cans will be only used on my PC (X-Fi Fata1ty headphone output ->Anthead headphone Amplifier -> Cans), and used for music (Trance, Electro, House, Techno, ocassionally pop) play back and occasionally a DVD. They will hardly ever be used for gaming so that's not a priority.

I absolutely love my D2000's. Best thing I've ever bought hardware wise to be honest. They are well worth the money in my opinion.

For that price, there are other options you can look at though. The main 3 are: Sennheiser HD650, Beyerdynamic DT880/DT990 and AKG K701. You can't go wrong with any to be honest. Read some reviews on head-fi and narrow it down to the sound signature you prefer.

Cheers for the info. The latter two cans aren't closed :), though my god the AKG's look sexy.

Oh, right sorry forgot about that.

The D2000's have brilliant bass also. It's not overpowering (though there is quite a lot of it), it's just perfect. It's a very nice example of quality over quantity. Exact opposite of DT770 Pro's. ;)

Slighty OT, but do you have them connected up with a seperate AMP?

If you do get these let me know; I've got some A900s and I agree, they do lack a real heavy punch in the bass.

I have a set of Audio Technica W1000s and a set of Sennheiser HD650s. If I were a basshead, I'd choose the Sennheisers. However, I prefer the sound stage and more melodic of the W1000s. I use a Graham Slee Solo headphone amplifier that makes both sets of cans sing. The W1000s are only 40ohms and can be driven quite well from a CD or MP3 player, where the HD650s impedence is 300ohms and an amp is essential to drives these at anywhere near their potential.

Previously, I owned a set of Sennheiser HD580s which I liked enough to go for the HD650s. I bought the AT W1000s on impulse, a month or so ago, direct from Japan for £217.00 inclusive, and really like their sound. If you're looking for high end 'phones or other hi fi stuff, you'll be quite agreeably surprised at their prices.

I'll probably sell off my HD650s and replace them with a set of AT AD2000s as I like to have both open and closed cans so that I can choose either, depending on what I'm listening to or watching and the circumstances. This was my position before I bought the W1000s and it was my intention to keep the HD650s for my open 'phones. However, the longer I listen to the W1000s the more intrusive (to my taste) I found the bass on the HD650s and the more I preferred their sound signature.

Having said all that though, I wouldn't feel too miffed were it impossible for me to upgrade. They are both excellent and rewarding 'phones to own.

Graham Slee who's a highly respected figure in the audiophile World speaks highly of the Sennheiser HD 250 IIs, see here...http://www.sennheiser.com/uk/icm.nsf/root/04393
These can be had for £130-ish. Graham likes a lot of bass, I understand. However, as someone else here has already observed, the best guide to which headphones are best for you is your own taste and preferences.

Good luck and happy listening.

About to order these but am getting confused as hell - what on earth is the difference between the normal model and the "K" model?

Denon AH-D2000
Denon AH-D2000-K

edit - I've googled for the last twenty minutes and I can't work it out? If it's different colours then I'm not bothered tbh, but if its an inferiour/different product I may wanna know about it :(

There isn't any difference, they're both the same.

D2000-K is their full name, but most sites call them D2000.

Ah - is that right? I've just found that the "K" model has black cups, but most photos on google image search puts the two models as identical...

Cheers for the info fella - ordering now - I'll report back once I've burned these in :)

They've all got black cups haven't they? :p

If you can get a picture of the box, I think you'll find they all say D2000-K on them.

I'm getting them sent from Japan for £164 :D. Add the fact that somehow Royal Fail will make me pay customs on it you can add another £30 or so on it I reckon.

So erm, no I haven't a pic of the box (yet :D), I'll get some up in the near future hopefully :)

Have you ordered yet? Because I got mine for £130 from audiocubes about 6 months ago. Try there if you haven't ordered yet. I got lucky and paid no customs though.

Also, if you didn't know yet; D2000s are probably the most comfortable headphones you'll ever wear.

I've just had a look on their website and they're $299.99 =~£150 ex delivery.

That's a good notion considering how much time these cans are going to be with my ears.

Please let us know if you sell the AT's :)

I'm an AT enthusiast and am considering investing in a pair of W5000s. I own a pristine set of Audio Technica W1000s complete with packaging and a recent receipt from Japan that I'd sell for £160.00 plus postage if I go ahead with the deal for the W5000s.

These are magnificent 'phones that I'd be happy to keep were I not so keen on getting their big brothers. See this review...

They look absolutely stunning.

But I don't think I could bring myself to buy expensive headphones like that, in case I don't like them. I wouldn't want to be dissapointed -- especially seeing as I don't have an amp.
