Dentists... 8mins = £41!

Then why pay someone to check them?

Oh thats right. Because you know nothing about teeth and a trained dentist might spot something before it goes terribly wrong.

Add to the fact that it is physically impossible for someone to see everyone his own teeth at all the angles.

Why don't you get insurance like denplan, so that you don't have to pay for checkups? When I go to my private dentist I get x-rays.

From what I've read, it's actually fairly expensive if you have a bad history, and if you have a decent dental history it's still probably a bit too expensive as you are unlikely to change your habits and stop cleaning/flossing.

I guess the fact I have a major distrust of dentists doesn't help.

Like car mechanics it's in their interests to 'find things', and I know this from first hand experience.

Many years ago I went to a new dentist and he said I needed four fillings (I'd never needed one till then). I had one done (with three to follow), and that evening I was out with some friends. I got speaking to someone and they mentioned they'd been to a dentist who has diagnosed they needed loads of fillings. He'd gone for a second opinion elsewhere and had been told infact he need nothing done.

The dentist in question was the VERY one I had just been to! I went for a second opinion, and the dentist said my teeth were absolutely fine. He was so infuriated he gave me the forms there and then to fill in to file a complain with the dental practionary board.

I filled in the forms sent it off, and a specialist gave me a checkup. In his words, the work that had been perscribed was 'paramount to assault'.

So... What happened to the dentist in question? Nothing! The dental practionary board could do NOTHING! They suggested I tried the council... And they did nothing... I wonder how many people this guys was ripping off and filling teeth than were perfectly fine.

....to this day I only have two fillings! Probably one of which was not needed!

So I guess my opinion of dentists is somewhat blemished

I am on Denplan, it's £15 a month, works out £180 a year.

2 check ups and year plus 2 clean and polish. Which on their price plan if i was paying cash would set me back £200+ so it's easily worth it, especially if i need any fillings, it'll be included. It also have other advantages, like one time i just went along with my parents, mum was getting a crown and she needed someone to translate and while I was waiting they had a free slot so asked if i wanted my teeth cleaned, i said okay and got it free.

my dad flies abroad to get dental work done (had lots of teeth ripped out during the war), think its all but finished now cost him i think like 15% of what he would have paid here.. pretty good deal!

checkup is minor, i don't bother with it, i mean whats the worst that can happen?

I assume you're joking but I'll say it anyway.

Obviously a minor problem can develop into a major one, since you've not visiting someone that can spot it early. Otherwise you'll end up looking like your dad without even being in a war. Fail!

It's about £8 a month for me and the quality of checkups is now considerably better than it was on the NHS, with x-rays being taken at every checkup.

The average fee for essentials is £11.27 per month, however I get a score of 100/100 at checkups. Dentists set their own fees according to denplan.

Not as bad as I thought, but still some (the government) say you only need a checkup once/year instead of every 6 months.
If you're lucky enough to get on NHS, that's only £16 for checkup + scale.
If you go private it's more like £80.

If you go regularly (at least 1/year), and denplan think you are the lowest risk, then the cost of insurance isn't giving you great value.

At £18/month I don't think I'd bother, £8/month is really good value though.

Its £45 for a checkup at my local and when i had some fillings which took about 30 min and cost £200 + which is very easy money i guess for the dentists.
