Depression

I have my ups and downs but i haven't been diagnosed with depression. When i feel low i just want to sleep and eat all the time

Good thread and good to read.

I admire anyone who is candid and open about mental health. It shouldn't be the taboo subject that many see it as. Around 50% of the calls I attend are mental health/concern for safety related which tends to be on the more extreme side where there is a threat to life but so many people live with depression and other mental health problems and get on with it as best they can.

One last thing I will say though is don't fall into the trap of 'that's it a suffer from depression / anxiety / insert mental issue here, there is nothing I can do about it'

That's when it wins.

Read the book Emotional Intelligence (Goes into depth at why others are so good at dealing with things and others are not and gives you tools to better control emotions) by daniel goleman and Learned Optimism.

Just finished that one (Emotional intelligence), very good read but very heavy on psychology/science side of things. I've not read learned optimism yet but it's on my list.

Your mental health is extremely important and the suffering that poor mental health can inflict can be indescribable. It seems remiss in this day and age that it is not given the same scope of consideration as other physical maladies.

Of course you always get fools like Theophany trying to make a joke about it. These idiots wouldn't make the same jokes on a cancer thread would they? Nor would anyone. Why it's acceptable in relation to mental health is beyond me. It seems the stigma still exists.

If physical illnesses were treated like mental ones... Sad but true.

I don't think its a stigma per say. I think it's the fact that there are people out there that say they have these mental issues, when infact they don't. Young teens cutting their wrists and saying they suffer from depression, etc. When it is just a cry for help. Hell, not too long ago it was almost 'fashionable' to be emo and have scars on your wrists.

It's a minority that make it harder for others (both to come forward and to be taken seriously)

I know you get people faking to have cancer etc. But it is not as easy as faking a mental illness.

I haven't made a joke about mental illness, get back in your box.

I used to be close lipped about suffering but now I know that talking helps others as well as myself.

I have wobbles, sometimes scary ones, as I think you never truly recover from suffering mental illness. But the support for these conditions still aren't there and now it looks like Mental Health services in the NHS may face budget squeezes things may get worse.

So much more common than you would think. Until a couple of weeks ago did not know of anyone who suffered from depression. Then my brother had a breakdown (thankfully getting better) and since talking to people about it seems like everyone has been through it or knows someone who has been through it.

You're on your way, 1st stop is acknowledging there is a problem.

This is the same as me, apart from the wife part :p having had one previously probably caused most of my conditions/symptoms ;)

I'm on my Second... The First having probably caused most of my problems! (psycho hosebeast!) Apart from the OCD, I've had that since I was a kid!! :D
