Any help from some forum members?

I'm trying to decide between to desks and it's really a case of price and quality. Should I purchase an mdf desk with an 'oak effect' which looks flimsy or can I justify spending £100 more on a real wood desk with thick, solid panels?

I like the look of the thicker desk and it looks very professional but surely the mdf will hold up and not show signs of wear and tear either?

Any help would be appreciated and I can link to both desks if anybody wants.

Generally I've found that if you go for something built from MDF they hold up fine structurally, but over extended time you can cause wear to the "effect" that is stuck on the top of it.

This kind of wear could create quite a nice effect on a solid panel desk, or alternatively can be sanded/varnished again to remove anything you don't like the look of.

Also, as/when you want to move the desk, something with a veneer on it will almost certainly scratch or peel in one place or another unless you are really careful, so that's something else to consider depending on how long you want it to last.

Ikea do some decent solid wood tabletops that you can then attach legs to, it might be worth looking at going for something like that instead.

Always good inspiration for what you can build found here too: http://www.ikeahackers.net/

the other half thinks I am a tad wierd when I go around IKEA/B&Q etc 'knocking' and feeling wood to get a feel for its thickness or quality. My general rule of thumb is if is feels/sounds and is on the heavy side, its decent quality.

I always go for a large mousemat or 'gaming surface' to protect the most used part of the desk

Any chance of a picture of the desk?

From the shots you've shown it looks rather nice.

Regards

A slightly better photo from a few months ago... Couldn't tell you where it's from though I'm afraid. It's a foreign furniture manufacturer, originally intended to be a dining table.
