On the rock/metal side:
The Gathering (Early albums were metal (clean female vocals), new albums are more progressive, electronic influenced rock; one the best bands ever imho.
How To Measure A Planet? is my favourite.)
Tool (Really there is nothing else that can compare. Heavy, complex, trippy rock/metal that can be harsh at times, but othewise, infinitely beautiful (e.g. the track "Reflection" on
Lateralus). All four studio albums are highly recommended though
Ænima and
Lateralus are my favourites)
Isis (Post metal, has some harsh vocals but it's used more as an instrument since the lyrics are non-existent. Very epic, crushing, sludgy metal and I defy anyone not be blown away after listening to
Panopticon from start to finish)
God Is An Astronaut (Very beautiful dreamy instrumental post-rock; highly recommended listening to any of the albums)
Rosetta (Progressive, Post-rock/metal with a very ambient spaced out vibe. Has screaming vocals like Isis but it's used to great effect and doesn't sound out of place.
The Galilean Satellites and
Wake/Lift albums are highly recommended).
Russian Circles (Get
Enter; similiar post rock/metal as above but equally good)
65daysofstatic (
Fall Of Math ~ experimental/math rock, very complex, intense and hugely moving at times.)
Kayo Dot (
Choirs Of The Eye ~ Progressive/avant-garde rock. Words fail to describe this, only five songs but every second is magical)
Sigur Rós (Ambient, electronic post-rock. Odd vocals, but used more as an instrument. The music is simply breath taking though;
Ágætis Byrjun,
( ) and
Takk are highly recommended)
Battle Of Mice (Only recently discovered this band, but I think
Day Of Nights is amazing. Sort of sludgy post-rock with weird sexy schizophrenic Björk style female vocals)
Porcupine Tree (Alternative/progressive rock. Can't really say much except
In Absentia,
Stupid Dream and
Deadwing are great albums, excellent musicmanship)
Anathema (Progressive rock like Porcupine Tree (although earlier albums were sort of doom metal). Slightly depressing at times, but very beautiful nonetheless;
Alternative 4,
A Fine Day To Exit and
A Natural Disaster are good starting points)
Dredg (Alternative rock/metal.
Leitmotif and
EL Cielo are excellent. They can be very intense (with some shouty lyrics) or very mellow and dreamy. Very unique and talented band)
Indukti (Check out the album
S.U.S.A.R. Album that is sort of like a combination of Tool and Porcupine tree but with a violin. Highly recommended)
Katatonia - (
The Great Cold Distance ~ Similiar to the above but heavier and more metal than rock. Clean vocals but their earlier albums were much more rooted in doom metal)
Opeth (Normally melodic death metal but
Damnation is a very mellow and melancholic acoustic album with cleanly sung lyrics. Very talented musicians and singer, though Opeth do have a certain style that's not to everyones tastes, but still it's worth a try.)
Pelican (Bruising, instrumental post-rock/metal.
Australasia is a sligtly odd album as it sounds like a bunch of stoned guys just thrashing away from start to end (except track track 5), but for some reason it's addictive; has this weird rythmic style that sounds awesome to me ... worth a try, you might like it)
Boris (
Heavy Rocks ~ downright, awesome stoner rock/metal, lol)
So much more amazing stuff out there, you just have to be prepared to experiment a little more and accept there is a heavier, darker side to life.
