Developer "threatens" to kill Gabe Newell - has game pulled from Steam

Games development is incredibly stressful. He just seems a bit young, I think valve should have been the "bigger man" and down played it. Pretty disappointing how they reacted if I'm honest.

The general rule is if you're a bit of a knob when you're young you tend to be one when you're older.

The whole he seems a bit young excuse is exactly that, a poor excuse to tolerate stupidity.

He will now learn a lesson and likely wont make the mistake again.

Sounds harsh but in the real world if I threaten an affliate or business partner I don't just lose the business but based on my appearance would have pc plod knocking on my door

Though i also believe steam are flexing their muscles and sending a message to other upstarts "this is what we can do" with their reply
Steam do have a monopoly.. in most jobs you will have to entertain or accomodate a big fish even when they don't do things as you'd like them, if he can't handle that maybe he should stick to development and hire a "people person" to deal with partners

You cant go around threatening to kill the owner (however empty the threat may be), publicly critising the company and throw your toys out the pram in general over what is a reletively small matter and still expect them to make you money, it's laughable. Besides, he's old enough to make a game and agree a deal to put it steam so he's old enough to know not to act like a complete prat.

Epically dumb move there.

I'm afraid very little sympathy springs to mind, and it's not as though there hasn't been plenty of people prosecuted or singled out because of unintentional heat-of-the-moment outbursts on social media before!

Threatening to kill Gabe and expecting to make monies from Steam?

Pull the other leg, it's got bells on it. You need(ed) Steam far more than Steam ever needed you!

Do you think it is acceptable for him to tell the world on social media that Valve are incompetent?(and before he has even given them a chance to rectify their mistake)...Why the hell should Valve do anything for him after that?

Edit- This sums it up better than I ever could from TotalBiscuit(and as an indie dev, if TB isn't championing you, you've done something wrong tbh)-

On another note, many have asked for my opinion on Paranautical Activity being removed from Steam due to one of the developers going on a rampage on Twitter which included a "Threat" to kill Gabe Newell. I supported those guys when I felt they were being made an example of unfairly when Valve denied putting them on Steam even though they had Adult Swim as a publisher. It was a pointless situation because soon afterwards Valve let publishers dump whatever tat they wanted on the store, meaning that the game was in my view unfairly treated. However, all that said, I believe that they have been fairly punished in this instance. You cannot act that way in public. Twitter is not a place where you can just shout into the void. You are shouting publicly to an audience of people who has the ability so spread what you say to thousands in a heartbeat. You can put in all the disclaimers you want but the reality is that when you tweet you represent your company in some capacity and there are real consequences to that. I feel sorry for the rest of the team and the game is good enough to be on Steam (though certainly it is not a great game), but there are consequences to acting that way that everyone should remember. Threatening to kill the CEO of the store you're trying to sell your game on and calling their employees incompetent is a PR disaster and you must accept the outcome of doing something like that. Twitter sucks, we'd all be better off without it. Whoever thought it was a good idea to make it really quick and easy to say a stupid thing to the entire internet that will stick with you for life has a lot to answer for, but this guy isn't a child and he has to live with the consequences of his actions, consequences which I believe to be fair. I can't and won't defend them.

It was a childish outburst from the developer but that's a pretty vindictive response from Valve considering it was incompetence on their part that riled him up.

Valve needed to be the bigger people here and they failed.

Be careful the next time you call Gabe "Fat", who knows what will happen to your Steam account or Steam store listing.

Are they setting out new "unofficial official" policy on what to do when developers say bad things about us when we make a mistake? Instead of fixing the mistake, they remove the item from the store.

Disclaimer for those who need it:
*obviously, saying your going to kill someone is not in the same league as calling someone "Fat".

The things people do when frustrated because something didn't go perfectly to plan.

If anything this COULD have boosted his sales if it was approached correctly instead of throwing out "death threats". While yes this will have gotten his game that i hadn't heard of until reading this a lot of publicity but im not sure people are going to go and buy his game because he send gabe a "death threat".

Surely death threat needs to be in quotation marks?

The journalist quoted a few posts up says "Threat".

He could have just waited a little bit for Valve to fix this error, I can't tell you how many times I have hit the magic Steam release button and something has 'gone wrong'. Always gets fixed in the end.

Bigger people? Why would anyone sell a product if the company supplying it sends a death threat and insults your company as a whole? Especially since the supplier is a bit of a no mark in the industry. They could have happily got the authorities involved as it could also be a legal issue but they didn't.

Any decent human being would sort it directly with Steam, not run to twitter like a complete throbber.

I'm with Valve on this one, his tone was aggressive and, whilst the risk associated to his "threat" is debatable, I still wouldn't rally against any organisation for taking a zero tolerance approach when it comes to threats of violence.

Even if they wanted to take a softly softly approach with this guy I still think the best way to do it would be to withdraw the game but then reinstate on appeal. That way they've taken steps to address the threat (they've made it clear that it's unacceptable and will be dealt with harshly) but then graciously offered the guy "one last chance".

He's acted in a way that could negatively impact a business partner, to make matters worse it's a relationship where he holds literally no cards. Had it been a big publisher who had instigated a PR debacle then the situation might be a little different. Don't crap on your doorstep basically, especially if the landlord can evict you with no ramifications for them.

The guy had a legitimate issue with Valve but decided to deal with it in an unprofessional and public manner and he's been suitably punished. End...

I dont get how people can moan that Steam is a monopoly when clearly they did something right and continue to do something right. The other competition fails time and time again to come close to them and if they want to go all rainforest-muscle-flexing-drama about it then thats their prerogative as the best at what they do.
To be honest they have changed the way the world consumes media and with that I think they have earned the right to be a little over-reactive and remind people to be more respectful :p
