Devil's Canyon Z97 Build

I'm really starting to dig this MSI z97 Gaming 9 AC board

but I also like the Asus Maximus VII Hero

Don't know which one to get. Thanks whyscotty for making this decision harder:eek::p:D

My pleasure :D

I like the look of the gaming 9 but I do not like the Z87 G45 gaming board I currently have so I was going to try a brand change.

Is it wise to snatch up a chip asap on release, I read a post somewhere on this forum and the fella said he would be as the first batches are usually good ones, Is that right?

Seems to have been the case with current haswell chips. First release chips clock better than more recent ones. Ill likely try and pick up a 4790k on release if its definitely confirmed that they work on z87.

Why is it you don't like the MSI board. The gaming 9 board is different from g45.

I would like to snatch up a devils canyon pretty early too, I have a feeling that a massive influx of used haswell chips is on the way, used intel prices may take a pretty hefty plummet!

Its just this total build I'm not happy with and it may be nothing to do with the board but I can't get a decent clock on my 4770k. Anything over 4.1 ends up blue screening and it was my first MSI board so I was thinking about moving back to Asus or trying Gigabyte. I also read something someone wrote about there's not being a great board for overclocking. That corresponds with my experience so I thought I'd cut out all the possible culprits, I realize the g45 isn't an expensive board or anything I just expected more.

Sorry to hear about your issues. It could be your 4770k I read a lot of the new models of this chip can't oc at all, but it could be your board too, but tbh it's more then likely your 4770k. I would think the 4790k will oc better on the MSI gaming z97 board then a 4770k? Just my thoughts.

Ive gone form a MSI Z97 G55 SLI to MAXIMUS VII Hero and my new 4670k does the exact same clock with the exact same volts on both boards, the only advantage one has over the other is my chip will do it with the ram at stock speeds with less volt on the Asus than it did on the msi.

Voltages on both was within spec but the msi needed 1.65v on the ram the asus only needs 1.56, be it droop or what ever.

Which bios did you like more?

To be honest the Msi had a slightly better set up for offset control etc but the Asus has a better layout and feature integration. Things like fan expert etc are streamlined well. The Asus is easy enough to tweak and has slightly more in-depth control inside the 'tweakers paradise' menu or what ever it is called though. I haven't messed with all of that power and phase control etc, no need really.

The things that sold the board for me are, features like keybot, fan expert, supreme fx audio and sonic radar.
With regards to sonic radar, I was not expecting a great deal from this as I thought it was just a gimmick but actually works quite well with its overlay.

Bear in mind the M.2 slot is Pcie only so none of the currently available M.2 drives that use Ahci will work, the flipside to this though is that when compatible drives are released they will offer better performance over currently available ones not only through raw speed but by negating the need for the poorly performing MS Ahci drivers in windows 8.1.

SupremeFX 2014, The onboard sound is pretty darn good actually. I have come from using a Asus Xonar DG. The sound quality and feature set of the supremeFX offer a lot of customization with some apparently at a hardware opamp lvl, the built in headphone amp still does a great job of driving the headphones and the sound quality for on-board is great. The virtual surround works very well, I would say as good as the dolby headphone feature of the DG. All this said the dedicated sound card will always be the better option though.
The supremeFX doesn't quite do as good a job and I put this down to the amplifier and nothing else, the DG offers more raw power and it shows in the low end, bass doesn't quite pack the punch you want (I want) and almost sounds as though the onboard headphone amp runs out of power in the low end when playing bass heavy tracks and the rest of the range drops off to compensate trying to achive almost a 'pseudo bass?'. I will be continuing to use this but if I start to listen to more music I will be breaking out my DIY lm3886 amp and getting a DAC to drive some speakers, I have just built a pc after 12 months of not having one so im just gauging my usage, for games though it will work just fine and headphones will do the trick.

Hope that helps/

I cant order till next payday which is about 2 weeks, so im probably screwed.
Cant wait to see your build, your almost there:)

Oh thanks mate. Me too:)

I would want to scream if it was 2 weeks. Sorry...I'm sure some retailers will still have stock some where. Can only hope Intel ship enough for demand?? If not Ebay will always have some. If you can never find anything ebay is always the best place to find it. So one way or another I'll get this chip and you will too:D

Hey mate. No...I'm using the SP120's with the red ring. I know lot of people have done red themes before, but I've never, never done a red theme ever. Always blue, or white or yellow, but never red. So this will be my first time going red. I'm also looking to buy a corsair k70 red led keyboard too. I have a blue led k70 now and mouse. Looking to change this very shortly:)
Are you going to use two fans or four fans (as push/pull) for the H105?

Just a heads-up the H105 only comes with 8 longs screw for mounting two fans onto the rad, if you gonna add another two fans, you'd have to source 8 more 6-32 UNC Radiator Screws.
