** Diablo 5 **

I love the franchise but I'm going to be much more wary of this than I was Diablo 4, which was ultimately a disappointment despite having convinced me to pre-order based on one of the late free betas.

I certainly wont be pre-ordering, and I actually hope they move away from the big open map type design we saw in Diablo 4. It really didn't do it for me after a few hours in, travelling around quickly ceased to be fun and turned into more of a chore.

At least the cgi / cutscenes / general story were decent in 4. Terrible start once you reached end game. Sad legendarys etc I know they fixed it in much later patches but I was done by then to really go back :/

The seasons didn’t do anything for me either.

No chance getting stung again.

Speaking of cutscenes

Blizzard is making a Diablo animated series for Netflix!

I loved d4 and will be playing d5
I don't pre order any video games but I will play d5

No wonder 4 is in the state it's in, been busy working on this but we've still got years to wait.

I'll be excited to play through the story and see all the cut scenes, but I hope they have learnt from their mistakes with 4.

Like others that have said I doubt I will be jumping in to this.

I really enjoyed D3 but D4 was missing something and never pulled me in like D3 did so will be holding off buying this on release if I ever do buy it!

4 is great, have played every season too. It's better than what I e played of POW2 and TQ2

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the story and the cutscenes in 4 especially the last expansion and I've played some seasons (last was when they added the cube) but it's not been a must rush back and play every season for me.

They had a panel yesterday just going over some bits. It was mostly just them trying to build hype. If you just want the highlights then:

  • They want to cater for all players, such as end-game grinders, casual players, people who just do the story, etc.
  • They had considered making this an expansion for D4, but their scope of change was so large it became D5.
  • They are bringing back proper procedural generation for dungeons and the main world.
  • A caravan of NPCs follows you through the game with meaningful characters. The likened this to the towns from Diablo 2, but honestly it sounds more like Diablo 3's implementation where you had people like Shen, Haedrig, Jahzia, and your followers.
  • Side quests completely revolve around the caravan. There said there are no random NPCs you meet with quests, because everyone is basically dead.
  • Three classes announced so far which are Monk, Plague Knight, and Demon Hunter.
  • Items have "tiers" and get more powerful the longer you use them. Joe said this is "sort of like D2" but I can't remember any items in D2 scaling like that.
  • Set items will be making a return.
  • They are looking at getting feedback from 2027, so possibly Alpha invites mid next year.

ARPG's end-game is always about the gear grind. I mean sure, the gameplay loop has to be fun, and D3/D4 both got that right, but beyond that what keeps people going is running end-game content over and over for the chance of those upgrades, and that's what D3 and D4 never really got right, but games like D2, Path of Exile, Last Epoch, and Grim Dawn did.

It's early doors, and they didn't mention loads, but they what they discussed about gear just reeks of the same puddle-deep itemisation that has plagued Diablo games for years because they are scared to make it more complex.

I enjoyed D3/D4 and will be continue to play the seasons, so another Diablo game is something to look forward to. But I feel this was announced far to early, there’s nothing there other than a cinematic and to tell us that all we’ve done in D4 is pointless, Diablo won.
