Hi got a 1.9 CDTi SRi Astra the Red Ti the 150Bhp model, now I have being looking at getting a DTUK tuning box fitted, I can pick one up from a friend for next to nothing but am a little weary of the proposed 200BHP it can make, the car has only covered 40k miles and is on an 06 plate, would I get any problems like a brolen gearbox or clutch fairly quickly? Would it be a nice power boost? I have the sport button so would this still work in the same way or would the car be on 100% power?

Any info would be great :)

You'll be putting a fair few components under stress, not least the clutch and gearbox but also the high pressure pump and other stuff.

If it made 180bhp I'd be more inclined to do it with little regard for the components. It's the increase in torque which will pull your clutch and gearbox to bits.

A modern common rail diesel fuel system is a very complicated bit of kit with fine tolerances.

"Tuning" boxes are really nothing more than variable resistors that fool the sensors (normally the fuel rail pressure sensor) so more fuel is injected. Sure, it works, but its crude and at the expense of some very expensive components.

You have to ask yourself, if Vauxhall could make a 200bhp 50mpg diesel astra by adding a 20 quid box under the bonnet, do you not think they would be making them out the factory like that?

If you want it tuned which the engine responds very well to I would get a proper remap rather than a tunning box. You can get a map that activates when you push the sports button on the dash which allows you to run it standard when you want.

I would pick a map around 190bhp and 290lbft to keep things on the safer side as the ones I have seen running over 200bhp tend to smoke a fair bit under boost. Gearboxes and clutches are strong on these so you shouldn't have any worries on that front.

I'd take a remap over a tuning box any day. As said above a tuning box ups the fuel rail pressure putting stress one expensive bits,

You'll get more out of a remap aswell!

Yeah this is what is worrying me a little as the car would be running on 100% power all the time just like having the sports button on permanently, I believe the map rather that the box runs at 160 without sports button and 200 with the sports button on, well I can test the DTUK Red box next week which I believe retails at £350 will use this for a few days and see how it fairs and buy it off my friend for the £75 he is asking.

Right ok have purchased a DTUK Green box and have being running it on the car now for 2 weeks, the thing now is a serious motor! Just pulls and pulls through every gear gets a few shocked looks from unsuspecting chavs in there rice boxes! Ok here is the problem the car died today the alternator has had it :( had to get the AA to tow the car and the damage is around £300 Inc labour to fit a new one, now would the box cause this as the car has being fault free since purchased??? Don’t want anything else to break :( May just sell it....

So you didn't listen to all the advice given and now it is broken? Quality.

Well I’m just trying to work out if these boxes can cause an alternator to fail! Sure a gearbox or the like that’s a risk I’ve taken but miffed as to why it could break this! May just be coincidence.

180 or 200bhp... whats the difference?! even at 180bhp it could have serious torque lower in the range

like i always say about these things... you need to see dyno plots of what it does to the output, or youre just stabbing in the dark
