Does anyone know what the difference is between these 2 versions of the 300GB VelociRaptor drive? The only thing that looks different to me is the heatsink is comes in.

Thanks for your help.

I'm too lazy to open up my case and check, but i can tell you this. If you do somehow remove it, then you won't be able to fit the drive in your case's hd bay. The heatsink is designed to be the right size for a desktop hard drive. The drive in itself is only a 2.5 but quite thick.

Oh I'm aware of that, but accoustics are far more important to me, and the drive is apparently completely different noise wise once it is taken out of the heatsink.

These get HOT tho.

In my MP its at the front (IE by the fan) and its still 5C hotter than all 5 HDs behind it!

Its noisy either way, I don't recommend it tbh :)

I really wouldn't take it out of the heatsink... If you are worried about noise but still want speed. May I recommend a SSD

The only problem there is for the same price, I'd only get a 60GB SSD, which wouldn't be enough for my C drive. I would need at least 128GB, which more than doubles the cost!
