Difficult landlady

When I did viewings earlier this month we ended up booking about 8 on the first day, but found a really nice place as the second place we visited, so cancelled the rest after number 4, at least it was nice and easy though :p

Then an annoying 2 week wait for 'referencing' (which is pointless, asked me boss if I could afford £600 a month, even though thats not how much I'll be paying as it's a shared house ¬_¬), but picking up the keys tomorrow (after paying yet more money, yay :p)

Good idea with the overlap, I've got that but my housemate doesn't, so he has to move in tomorrow (last day of his current contract), whilst I've got until the 26th feb :)

Our 4th viewing tomorrow is /incredibly/ cheap - it might be a hole but the description is favourable... so we'll see. Will def be asking probing Qs about the landlords!

My landlord is a waste of space, but the rent is cheap. I'm not that bothered about compromising for that reason, even though he is legally in breach of a number of tenancy laws. Worst comes to the worst, I'll screw him over in court when I leave.

Well, just a thread revival...

We're out, now in a nice new flat (which in itself was initially disappointing in terms of broken things and cleanliness when we got there, but finally sorted now), and finally we hear news about the deposit.

The old landlady wants £70 for a small tear in the really rather cheap/thin kitchen lino (which was caused by workmen moving the fridge-freezer, that we notified her about straight away and I repaired to the best of my ability), and for "general wear-and-tear" (which isn't actually deductible from deposits, anyway).

Good luck! We're not agreeing to that. Muahahaha.

I got screwed to the tune of £75 by my previous landlord for wear and tear and 'traffic' marks in the carpet (despite the landlord letting the house with carpets that were disgusting and had 7+ cig burns on it) we steam cleaned the carpets twice whilst there and left it tidier than when we moved in, yet still got screwed (said the glass table was too dusty). Was royally hacked off, but hey the letting agent didn't give me enough notice to challenge it, just sent me an invoice and a cheque less the £75.

That sucks. Yeah we've had similar behaviour from old landlords. Glad the deposit protection schemes are now in place - but it sounds like your letting agent didn't exactly help you :(

Luckily our letting agent (/middlemen) are very much on our side and realise that she's a real pain. I think they'll pleased to see the back of her as a landlord on their books.

All the previous properties we have had through the letting agent, they have been great, so it made it a little easier to digest, one bad experience out of 4 houses isn't a bad average.
