Digg.com - Modern Warfare 2 boycott.

I can't believe how popular this game had turned out amongst the PC community, despite all the fuss about dedicated servers.

It's currently beating Counterstrike 1.6 and Source with amount of people playing. I have never seen this done on a FPS before. :/

Insane.

COD4 had several hundred thousand for about the first 6 months of its life (its peaked at 250 thousand this year alone), MW2 on the other hand hasn't broken 100K in its opening and arguably busiest week.

My brother and his clan was so 'offended' by the the lack of dedicated servers that everyone says they boycotting it. Now guess which game is all 80+ of them playing? :D So much for the 'ban'

Exactly what Infinity Ward were hoping for. Most gamers have an attention span of a lemon these days and IW are now moving towards a pay to play model for future CoD games (if it comes out on PC at all).

The gamers have got no-one to blame but themselves for supporting the company and we'll now see more developers going for this setup and/or fees/micro-transactions.

With IW.net I wouldn't be surprised if in future some perks are only available for a fee or high ranks only available to monthly subscribers. We already know they're planning on limiting map packs to paying customers.

I guess at the end of the day though if people enjoy this model/game then that's up to them and something we'll all end up getting used to.

What's with the constant stream of criticism from people who haven't actually played the game? Know what? It's actually pretty good. But you wouldn't know that....because you haven't played it.

It's fine to be outraged at the castration of the PC multiplayer - hell, it racks me off - but what is there is well put together and exquisitely designed. But you wouldn't know that...because you haven't played it.

I don't need to play it to know you're paying more for a hell of a lot less. See below.

No hotlinking of images.

I'd heard lots of positive feedback about the game, brought it, the actual game is very good, even if the engine is starting to feel pretty dated. But its completely ruined by the p2p, i cant play the modes i want to play and i spend so much time just waiting to find a game because the matchmaking is dreadful or its really quiet

I doubt they will go pay to play with their main market as consoles. Maybe DLC but I cant see a monthly fee for a FPS.

I bet more than 90% of the people saying that they are going to boycott the game end up getting it sooner or later. Not that this failed attempt at a boycott would work anyway.

Ah how naieve.

Monthly subs are coming. You guys who bought into it are so dam lucky :p

Stop hotlinking images. If you do it again you will receive a suspension.

Again, you miss the point. Games are about fun, no? Or do you play them for some other reason?

I don't really like the way things are heading with the franchise, but it doesn't excuse the fact that an opinion based on what other people think compared to actual experience of the issue in question lacks credibility. If you get round to playing it and don't like it, fine - I'd understand why - but until then.....

Yes, because a questionnaire form to see if people would be willing to pay for it definitely means it will happen.

Perhaps I should make a form to see if everyone on the forum would be willing to give me money.

I didn't create the spreadsheet.

Games are for fun! You're 100% right there. So why the hell would I want to turn the future of the industry into something which I have to shell out monthly for, on top of buying new hardware/software.

I want to keep games fun, and in doing that, a one time purchase.

I don't need to play the game, to know that a system which removes all freedom and control from the user and puts it back in the hands of the publisher, so they can sell back to you what they removed, is a bad bad thing for the future of gaming. A path I don't want it to go down.

Yeah, realised that after I posted. See above ninja edit :D

Presumably if you don't want monthly subs, you're against MMOs right?

No, MMOs are fine for monthly sub, because they are upholding and running the servers, aswell as patching every 2-4 weeks and constantly providing new content and features into the game meaning that the game is constantly extended beyond its original release product.

An fps stays what it always was, and fixing a couple bugs and adding a couple maps is not even close to the amount of maintenance and additions MMO developers put into their games.

What's the point in paying for monthly subscriptions? If I want to spend that much cash over a long period of time, I might as well pay for some non-home-entertainment!

That's not to say some would be willing to pay anyway though...

I guess we'll have to see how far they take the concept of monetizing the franchise. If it reached the level of support that an MMO has, I wouldn't mind paying for it - but it totally depends on what features they end up giving us.

Exactly, nor do I or many others and that is exactly what the boycott was about.

No matter how good or bad the game is, it was standing up the **** poor attitude IW and Activision took and the way they wish to drive PC gaming and gaming as a whole in the future.

It's something I really do not want to see happen, so I haven't bought the game and I won't buy the game. This one might be good but so what? It's the principle and precedent it sets that worries me more than the gameplay and the next game along to take this approach might not be so good to make up for the ****, but by then it'll be too late.

Whilst you're considering that I'll be playing BFBC2 with my dedicated servers and no subscriptions - and more features than it's predecessor too! (rather than less *MW2*)

How is it naieve? I said it would be for DLC which is basically what it says in the post you put. Its for EXTRA stuff not a monthly sub to play the game.

If you think they would actually do monthly sub for it then you are the niaeve one.

Okay, but who's going to want to play an fps where their friends can customize everything, weapon stats, characters, badges, where their friends can make strategies in 'rooms' that you can't enter because you haven't bought it, where the rest of their clan is having scrims but you can't because you haven't bought the leagues.

There'll basically be no point in playing if you can't do what everyone else can. It would be like playing an MMO and being capped at level 20 when there's 80 levels. You can play it, but you want to play the full game with everyone else.
