There is a mint Clio 172 cup near me for sale at just 4k with only 45k on the clock. My nextdoor neighbour has offered me £2600 for my 306 gti-6 (1997 R, Diablo Red, Mint Con, 85k) I could also haggle on the clio a little. So for under £1500 I could have a much newer and slightly quicker car. My car is prolly worth not much more than 2k so the offer is excellent for me. What shall I do? I know its more a sidestep but its tempting

edit: actually with 45k on the 172, id say go for it. but like you say, more a sidestep.

I always thought the 172/182 was classed as one of the best fwd cars, can't say i've ever heard the same about the 306
Infact only thing i've heard about the 306s handling is the fierce lift off oversteer?

Watch out for cups - insurers dont like them due to having no ABS so get a quote if insurance matters to you
Cracking cars though, wont find a better handling/preforming hot hatch for the money (bar a 182 obviously)

)the 306 gti-6 was a legendary hothatch in its day and still kind of is, the 172/182 platform is its modern equivalent.
the oversteer issue is only for pussies that lift off half way through a corner 
perfectly easy to keep under control, very progressive i find.

Ah cool, never really rated them like that- probably because I don't really like the looks therfore they must be rubbish at everything else!

I used to be very very scared to drive my car hard (yes.. I know its a diesel but its pretty much a '6 underneath)
But I have since learn't that if you power through a corner it sticks like chewing gum to the pavement, back off and there isn't a nice feeling
OP.. difficult decision IMO.. but then again I don't like Clios
Not much in it handling and performance wise, the Clio will be lots better on fuel though (mid 30s when driving normally, aren't the 306s quite bad on fuel?) and is a newer car if that makes a difference to you.
Also if it's not one of the cups that had the later climate option you'll be losing your air con as well as abs
