Did something remotely similar, although not career ending, recently myself.

Fell privvy to information leading to a colleague's (and friend's) disciplinary meeting.

Tbh, as a friend and regular team mate, it was a no brainer.

Found out said info an hour before his meeting. As I'm experienced in his field, said 'malpractice' is common in our line of work owing to mechanical deficiencies, plus experience in other legal scenarios, I Iet him know and exactly what to say.

Unfortunately, he'd already made a formal written representation of his version of events which couldn't prevent the litigation I could offer.

Like I said, not career ending, but did land him with a final written warning, valid for a certain period of time.

In other words, your loyalty belongs to your friend of 27 years. Tell him!
