DirectX 10

Technically Bioshock isnt even a true directx10 game. Neither is crysis as a true DX10 will be DX10 only and not have a DX9 version any game that has DX9 version i dont care what developers say will will be a DX9 and 10 hybrid. All current and all games close to release are DX9 games with a few tweaks and DX10 features added. None of these games were designed purely for DX10. The first game that will only run in DX10 and show its potential will probably be Alan Wake.

Wow, that's the Hugest pile of **** I've heard all day.

Yh just because a game is written to support both dx9 and dx10 due to the millions of consumers who do not have dx10 capable cards doesnt mean it is not a true dx10 game.

Does this all mean that it's pointless getting a DX10 capable card when you're not planning on getting Vista?

Ie, would you be better off with a 1950xt or similar rather than a 8800gts if you're going to play Bioshock etc in DX9? (considering the price difference too).

Not really since the 8800/2900's are pretty much the best cards for DX9 by a very decent margin.

An 8800GTX would be faster in most cases than 2x 1950xt's for instance.

Ironically the 2900/8800 cards won't be too fast in DX10 - the next gen of DX10 cards (9800GTX/GTS) will probably be much much faster.

I'm going to echo the sentiments of my fellow OcUK'ers, that's a load of twaddle.

DirectX 10 is just a new, expanded version of DirectX 9. Every version of DirectX has had the same core components (DirectDraw, Direct3D etc.) and each version has simply added new ways to generate effects and new ways to optimise applications to run more efficiently.

By your logic Windows Vista is not Windows Vista, it is just a "Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista hybrid" and not a completely new operating system. As you can see, your logic here is ultimate fail.

basicly yes. because vista only as directx 10... xp will never have directx 10..
Unless you buy a DirectX 10 card for its DirectX 9 performance, 8800 and 2900 are still the cream of the crop in both modes. ;)

Isn't really though, 2900XT/8800 are still worthy purchases for DX9, anyway DX10 won't be mainstream for quite a while and when that happens there will be better cards out.

Okay, so how long will it be before all decent games are DX10 only, so we have to get Vista? ;)

Not that Microsoft would do that, of course.

edit: good point above....

We are enthuasist we buy high end equipment to play at high settings, so most of us will get vista to play in dx10 which will give extra effects, Yes they may not be much but we love eye candy.

I have vista ultimate and an ATI 2900XT 1024MB card but i have installed directx 9.

Thats ok, Vista has Dx10 already in it, but Vista also has Dx9 in as well, as it needs Dx9 to run Dx9 software as Dx10 is not backwards compatabile. :)

He asked if it's pointless to get a DX10 card if you don't intend to upgrade to Vista.

I said that it's not, because the 2900/8800 also happen to be the best DX9 cards for those of us not interested in Vista or DirectX 10 for the time being. I.E. Until Vista gets a service pack and DirectX 10 gets some decent titles.

I don't know about Jihad but I was just talking about "the best" DX9 cards out, which also happen to support DX10.

Its not pointless getting a Dx10 card without getting Vista, as Dx10 cards are the fastest Dx9 cards you can get, happily using mine in Dx9/XP and will be a good while yet, especially until Vista has better driver support, and theres a whole load of Dx10 games out etc..., im not rushing out to buy it just to play Bioshock with a few more effects in a couple of weeks, when it will play and run great in Dx9 under XP, thats a lot of moola for 1x game. :)

You could say 'yeah, but Vista can also play your Dx9 games as well', and ill say 'yeah, but im playing them fine and dandy now in XP, so why would i want to spend whatever it costs to do exactly the same thing', thats just chucking money away and a pointless exercise. :p

maybe i read his question wrong. but how i read it is he wanted to know where to download it so im guessing he wanted to play directx 10 games.. that why i said vista only has it.

Aye that was his original question, but you quoted another question that was asked in this thread.

"Is it pointless to buy a DX10 card if you don't plan to upgrade to Vista?" (Slightly paraphrased.)
