Directx 12 to not support Windows 7.

That's to be expected, Win10 shapes out pretty good anyway - as people said Win8+classic shell isn't too bad at all, and Win10 should be better.

i suppose you could liken their decision to someone like bmw saying they will no longer service 2010 or older models you have to sort it yourself. im pretty sure if the majority of customers had pre 2010 models you would think they would bend over backwards to service them. its not like mr gates is short of money and could go bankcrupt because of it.

is there any laymans guide to how the steam os works and what software will run on it? i had a quick google of linux before and was like whoooah! way over my head. i watched a youtube video about open scource os' and that guy said unless you really know what youre doing steam os isnt for you.

Surely as DirectX is written by Microsoft they have the right to choose the OS which can use it?

Windows 8 is great with start8. I cannot go back to 7.

(I could return to vista though - loved that OS)

You were doing so well until you mentioned Vista....:p

If there are 50million windows 7 and 8 users who can all use Mantle, and only 5 million Windows 8(if it's on that) and Win 10 users who can use DX12, which version would get priority? As and when Mantle will also be available on multiple platforms that DX isn't and won't be available on. It's like they are going out of their way to give game devs a reason to favour Mantle.

At some point Mantle will likely work with at the very least AMD gpu's, but free for Intel and Nvidia to make drivers for, on Windows, Android and Linux/SteamOS. Having DX12 available asap across Windows versions would give dev's less reason to think .... well, Mantle will actually be available to more people than DX12... which will we now put the most effort into. Potentially work on Mantle, tell nvidia they will have to support it or wait for DX12 support, do one set of work and have it work on Steam OS with little to no extra effort.

MS should be making it as seamless and easy as possible to get to DX12 for everyone right now, anything else is borderline retarded.

I wish I had some of what you are on sometimes. Some crazy numbers there.

Rough estimates put the Windows 8 userbase currently at about 150 million installs. Far more than the entire desktop *nix and OSX user bases combined. Added to the continuing rumours that Win 10 will be either free, or at the very least a very cheap upgrade for existing 7/8 users. I don't think there will be many worries about the available install base of DX12 not being the primary focus for developers (I'd imagine Microsoft are already building Xbone development kits around this new version of DX). I'll wager that within 3 months of DX12 being made available to end users, the number of PC's that support it will exceed the number of machines with Mantle support (remember DX12 will be supported on all NV hardware going back to Fermi, and all DX11 capable Intel IGP's).

Windows 8.1 is still stated to get feature updates for many years to come (unlike 7) so I don't think there will be many worries about DX12 not being made available for that platform. In addition to the fact Nvidia wont touch Mantle with a barge pole, Intel being rubuffed and going away to make DX12 demos instead, absolutely no software vendor is going to ignore an install base of that size to prioritise Mantle. So things will continue to prioritise DX as they can hit all hardware with a single code base. Any thing in addition to that, is just that.

I do find it strange that people think Microsoft should support and develop new features for older operating systems in perpetuity. Try running new Mac software from Apple on a version of OS X that's only a few years old. Windows 7 will be at least 6 years old when 10 hits. I don't want software that old holding back the latest OS. Heck, even 8.1 is a much better OS for gamers than 7, just spend a few quid on Start8 and you have a superb OS that beats 7 in every aspect.

Win 7 is already five years old, how old will it be before DX12 is released. Personally I think its a fair move but I can also understand this will be an annoyance to some.
+1

I agree W7 is getting old now..and it time to move on..

Reminds me of all the people that where still using windows XP after 10 years..

Excellent.

So if we want to do any gameing in the future we'll have to upgrade to a new version of Windows because Microsoft says so.

Not impressed.

If you could get over your prejudices for five minutes, you'd see a popular consesus that while 8.1 is far from perfect, it's much improved, and even performs moderately better on older computers - I've been running it since launch, and can't imagine going back to 7 at this point.

Win 98/SE - Ok, but had to wipe and reload it every few months.

Win ME - Worst OS I have ever used, constant crashing, you never knew what what go wrong next.

Error exists between monitor and chair :p - I will defend ME with my dying breath; I had a number of computers that ran the OS, and they ran without a glitch.

So 5 years is the same as 10 years to you.

While i do think its time to move on from windows7 that does not mean that people should all move onto something newer just because its newer, they should move on to something newer which they feel that is right right for them.

I had no problem going from XP,vista,Windows7, but windows 8 no thanks, im looking forwards to windows 10.

Win 98 - Good
Win ME - Nasty
Win XP - Good
Win Vista - Nasty
Win 7 - Good
Win 8/8.1 - Nasty
Win 10 - ??
But what if it was put this way...?

Win ME - Nasty
Win XP - Good
Win Vista - Nasty
Win 7 - Good
Win 8 - Nasty
Win 8.1 - Good
Win 10 - ??

:D

On the more serious note, I honestly hope Win 10 is actually a great deal better than Win 7 that's actually worth the upgrade, rather than like people upgraded to Vista for dx10, and had to live with a horrible, poor performance OS. I mean after the whole controversies with Win 8, anything is possible from MS...

New dx should really only be a bonus for people upgrading to the new OS version, but not the sole reason for it...

Been using 8.1 since release. I find it better in everyway except one, lower unigine heaven score.
Out with the old, in with the new I say. I Would be very surprised if DX12 came to W7.

this has been debunked, Microsoft now saying richard huddy has no evidence
& was misinformed.

(heard it from Linus-tech-tips when he was reading a email.

This tbh 8.1 is great imo.

This, some people can't seem to handle change.

Honestly, you could get windows 8 for like £15 and I guess windows 10 will have the same kind of deal, they got a few things wrong with the 8 launch but they did address and fix fairly quickly, so credit to them.

So let's put the pitchforks away and see what actually happens.
