DirectX and OpenGL will start offering low-level access in order to reduce draw overhead

I wonder what this is about.

IMO DX12 is also more about the XB1 getting one over on Sony, to create development parity with the PC which puts the PS4 as the odd one out in developing games.

Don't convince yourself M$ will make DX12 for PC anything like what it is on the XB1. :)

Not really, a lot of optimisations in terms of shader language is going to be the same, bringing a lower level api to PC just makes more of both the X1 and PS4 optimisation more directly transferable to the PC.

DX12 will be almost identical on PC to the X1. DX12 is not an update to the console. The consoles have a low level api AND a high level API. THe low level one is lower level than Mantle(and almost certainly however "low" they get DX12). It's basically to the metal or as far as you can go, it's not particularly difficult to get this or expose the performance. A higher level API will never expose that much performance. They have the higher level api's for dev's with less money/coders who aren't so focused on performance and may favour trying to aim at as few API's as possible so one that does PC and at least one console is a bonus.

DX12 basically would enable a little more access for the higher level API on the X1, it won't come close to the existing low level API on there, so nothing will change in that respect. There is no reason for the higher level API on the console to be anything other than almost exactly what's available on the PC precisely because it makes it easier for dev's. I presume most indie dev's(who would focus on the higher level api) will likely ignore such features exposed anyway.

AFAIK it's already seeming like PS4 is the lead development platform for most multiplatform games. Hearing now it has better tools for the devs, something MS is known for in the past and were WAY ahead for most of the last gen, but they made a massively massively more complex APU... for no apparent reason, which has likely the reason for the tools being miles behind this gen. The fact it has way way more power as well, PS4 makes the most sense as lead dev platform for console games, and well. It's seeming very much already like they make a game for 60fps/ps4, and they just port it to X1 and it runs slower.... In the future they'll likely spend more time turning down features to get lower quality but at 60fps.

I can't see any reason in the future for this to change, DX12 on X1 won't make the blindest bit of difference, not a single AAA title will use it on the console, but the already much faster low level API.

I nearly guessed at Nvidia being on board with Mantle and having hardware support on next gen Nvidia cards but i changed my mind :D

What i said seems more obvious knowing what GDC stands for :)

Maybe GTA 5 has Mantle and thats why its been delayed for PC for so bloody long :p

If I was an AMD user, I would be begging for GTA V not to have Mantle, purely from the way the previous GTA games have been plagued with problems.

I couldn't believe that GTA IV required me to run fraps at 30fps to be able to finish the game and that was a couple of years after release (tap x to climb into the chopper).

Not had any problems with it, when trying to organise stuff and moving around a dozen say I dunno, randomly 700mb or 1.3-1.6gb files to different folders, particularly to external drives. I can now stack them up and each separate move is contained in the same "copying files" window, not one each, and I can pause all of them and leave one going and just un-pause them one at a time rather than having. It's very convenient and visually so much neater to get one window and and add a new transfer to it. It's honest to god the best improvement in windows 8 and I've wanted them to do it for a decade. It also does the current speed... accurately :o

It shows you a graph of the speed over time giving you a good sense of how much is left and giving you precise current speed, that also is a brilliant improvement over the random average speed which went down over time and gave laggy and useless info with a completely inaccurate time left.

Some images of what I'm talking about, seriously it's insane that such a small thing is such an improvement, even more insane it took so long.

there was an option when moving a lot files in windows 7, even back to xp i think, where you can set it to auto rename files with the same name

i dont see that in windows 8, maybe its hidden somewhere
that for sure cost me some time :(

windows 8 to me is them trying to keep hold of the casual pc user, i dont believe *the mouse will be gone in 5years*, touch screen is way slow unless all you are doing is surfing or checking email, gestures and voice command is even slower too

mouse will outlive me i think :o

I wonder what this is about.

I'd rather Mantle in GTA 5.. it needs the perf going by how GTA 4 ran on PC. And i cant remember having any problems with the game.. except it just ran slow and was juddery with shadows maxed out.
