Dirt deliverd

I think that you will take a performance hit if you were 2 get a wheel, then you will improve. The main reason 2 get the wheel is for the more immersive experience - to feel the drift comming on!!!

On Day 9 of 2nd broken 360 in repairs with Forza game unopened at home :(

KJ

True but with the controller i get a feel when the drift is coming on but cant seem to control it that well. Probably with the wheel ill be able to control my drifts a lot better.

Only problem i have with getting the wheel is that i really dont have a desk to clamp it onto...my xbox and lcd sit on a table...el cheapo one i picked up from Argos a while back and there isnt enough room on the table to clamp the wheel on. Plus id be sitting too close to the lcd screen for my liking....guess i could just place it on my lap if i wanted to??.

Yeah it can go on your lap, as has been said its more immersive, i dont think it makes you any better though, its quite a big change though.

It is easier to control a drift with a wheel. You feel it start to slide, as you lose tension in the wheel like happens in a real car. And then you can feel the bite point when you bring it back, and also the movement is analogue. Even if you use the analogue sticks, it is still pretty much full side to full side. With the wheel you get that extra control.
Also i find it 10 times easier to use manual gears on a wheel. I just can't do it on a pad well, but with the wheel it feels to natural that i hate playing any other way.

You could get a table mate II. That is what i am gonna do as i am fed up clamping onto my desk and off my desk.
It does work on a lap, but i just can't play it on my lap, it just feels all wrong.

Is the 30fps cap annoying or is it still smooth gameplay?
I haven't played it but I can safely assume that most people who have would say that it's perfectly fine etc. as they usually do :) So it depends how much you personally care about such things.

Very smooth gmaeplay imho, havent seen any sort of stuttering or the likes yet.

Hmmm thats my fear, even though i havent used one but putting it on my lap wouldnt seem right to me. Ill have a look at that table mate thingy your talking about.

Got a few hours in this-morning, here's what I think so far.

First thing you notice are the graphics, they are fantastic, stunning at times. The amount of detail is incredible, each blade of grass is rendered and sways in the wind, obstacles move when you hit them (for example when you hit a tyre wall, it brakes up and the individual tyres scatter), crash barriers deform. Talking of crashes, the damage model is fantastic, you really 'feel' the impacts in the cockpit veiw with the windscreen shattering etc.

The crashes look particularly great in the replays, with bodywork bending and individual pieces of glass flying everywhere. The lighting and shadowing looks gorgeous too. One thing some people might not like is the fact that everything has a kind of golden tinge to it, like there is some arty-farty filter on the 'camera'. I like it, but it wont be to everybody's taste.

There is a downside to the stunning looks though, and that is the fact that they run at 30 fps, as opposed to the 60 fps of Forza 2. It's nice and smooth for the most part, but it does sometimes get choppy/jerky when there are lots of cars on screen. When that happens you really long for the liquid smooth framerate of Forza.

It's annoying because 30 fps would have been fine if it never dipped below that, but I'd say it definately drops below 20 at times :(

And the handling?

The Buggys, ORR pick-ups and 'Rally Raid' trucks are lots of bouncy, big-jump, sideways fun. Seriously, they are a blast, and a nice diversion from the track driving of Forza.

As for the rally cars, I can only describe the handling as a bit strange. The lower powered cars just dont feel anywhere near loose enough, and the brakes just tend to stop you instantly rather than help you get into a slide.

Things get better with the Scoobs and Evos, the higher power helping them act a bit more loose. Tweaking the setup helps a lot too, but that strange brake behavior is still there.

Overall the rally cars aren't unplayably crap, but they should have been a lot better. Problem is you have to do rally events to progress in the carreer and unlock better cars and tracks.

All in all I'd say it's probably worth getting for the buggys/ORR pickups/Rally Raid trucks alone as they are great fun, just think of the actual rally cars as a mildly entertaining way to unlock more cars and tracks for the other modes.

Oh, and multiplayer support is almost non existant, you can't actually race against anyone over live, all you can do is a rally tryig to beat the other players times. You dont actually see their cars on your screen. Utterly gay, because a multiplayer Live game with the Buggys would have rocked.

The multiplayer really lets this game down. How can they not include multiplayer buggies. Honestly what the hell were they thinking?

The end of my wheel clamp is 20cm away from my 37" LCD. Personally I wouldn't have it any other way.

That's a shame as the wheel adds so much more to the game. I could never go back to the pad but I suppose if you don't know what you're missing you never miss it.

I agree it adds more but I dont wanna new starting point for Forza, when I play new driving games it will be with the wheel.

Just had an hour on Dirt, my first impressions - Fantastic visuals with lots of HDR lighting and yes there is a gold'ish glow to the game but i like it. The Buggys etc. are big and bouncy and are a welcome break to normal rally and race cars, the rally cars feel ok to me but nothing will ever beat the feel of sega rally on the saturn and i some how wish Codemasters would have gave this game that same feeling.

Multiplayer isn't a issue for me anymore so i don't care ;) I like this game and would rate it above Forza, It does have that one more go appeal :)

I almost cried into my hat when i first played this game. I thought I'd wasted another £40 on a car game I wasnt going to like, but all that changed when i went to cockpit view, oh my !

I feel this Is the closest im going to get to rally driving (lol)
I just cant beleive how different/better this game feels in cockpit view.
the graphics are about 8/10, with points lost for v-sync issues and a few other minor points not worth mentioning.
although you can play your own music whilst playing i'd quite like to use the ingame music but that feature isnt available, why ?
had an hour on career mode and im very please i sold forza 2 for this, dam that game wound me up summert wikered !

:)

I got DiRT delivered today. It's OK, but it wasn't long before I was back on Forza 2.

I think it's come out at the wrong time. If it was 3 months ago people would be raving about it!

Ah now that glow effect,, bloom is it?? yup its just doesnt feel right, ads a too polished sheen to what should be a gritty looking racing game, and when you watch the replays, the cars seem to float a little, and framerate glitches, and some slight tearing,, other than that a top game

Im trading Forza in for this today, i tried again with Forza last night and tried to race the vx220 on the lightweight cup, utterly impossible. I gave up after an hour and threw the wheel across the floor, i just dont enjoy it, i wish i did but i find it tedious.

Played Dirt last night for an hour or so and have mixed feelings. The buggies and truck things are very good, and some of the Rally Modes are ok too. However, some of the cars just feel too lightweight though, and the handling seems a bit odd.

Graphics are very nice, but there is horrendous slowdown when you have a screen full of cars throwing a lot of dust up. Thankfully this doesn't happen very often as you are racing solo.

Another annoying problem is I can't find a view which I like for all modes. Bumper cam is too low for some rally stages, bonnet cam looks too high and feels weird, and cockpit view is normally obscured by stuff so you can't see anything :/
