Dirt Rally 2 VR out now

No tweaking yet, everything on default ultra and on. No micro stutters, but there's a disconnect with the frame rate tanking. I figure I can solve that to some degree by flicking things off and turning down a few of those ultra settings.

Quite surprised I expected worse with a lot of the noise that's been made, it wasn't that bad apart from the frames. Just from playing the first rally, you can tell the game has more about it. The car interior trumps DR1, the track and trackside is a lot more detailed and vibrant.

If things work out turning down a few things and the code gets a little tighter, it'll be one I put some time in to.

Anybody on the fence, id wait for the first patch.

Which according to the latest Road book, you could be in for a long wait.

In addition to this, we are currently investigating what is required in terms of time and resources to implement Oculus SDK support into the Steam version of the game.

Adding Oculus SDK support to the Steam version is not a simple matter of flicking a switch, nor is it a case of copy/pasting code from the Oculus version. It’s also not something that can happen immediately or in a very short space of time. We’ll share more in the future once things progress.

While the Oculus SDK might see the steam version, I doubt very much that the Open VR version will see any further support beyond PR pleasantry. The VR port was outsourced and from what Codemasters are saying is that now they are responsible for fixing it going forward. From what they've written in the blog, it doesn't seem hopeful does it:(

Time an resource allocation isn't something Codemasters earn a good reputation for when it comes to supporting older or low performing product. I doubt the VR sales will grant the resources required.

This is a shame, as it is a decent game and the VR is pretty good.
Hopefully it gets patched sooner rather than later as the Stream VR is nowhere near as good as Ocululs SDK.

I got the steam version yesterday and on initial testing my system will run the rift at a steady 90fps with most settings on high or ultra, some key ones on low. The only issue I have is a bit of judder when quickly looking left/right and I get the USB polling spikes which are fixed by plugging and removing my joystick while the game is running. Not ideal but it does work and I got it for £22.49. I would not have been happy paying full price in it's current state.

Just updated to 1.8 and I'm now able to run this with much higher settings. It's looking a lot better now. Judder gone when looking around and a much smoother experience. Can't wait to try it out with my new wheel when it turns up.

Tried again last night and just sat in the 'freeworld' arena driving around thing and it still felt awful. I played around with so many settings but still couldn't find the good trade of between looking nice and running well.

Started to feel motion sick after a while and that doesn't normally happen to me :)

Anyone else had problems playing last night? Servers offline of something. This is the problem when the games become too reliant on talking back to servers. What will happen after the apocalypse?

Returned to this today for the first time after the 1.08 update and the new SteamVR version.

Without changing anything from before, there's a huge difference. Before I was struggling with the frame rate, probably around 30/40fps which made it a disconnected experience I just couldn't care for. No changes I now have a smooth 90, only chopping once on me during a village section in Spain, likewise in the rain in a section in Australia with buildings around.

Most of the graphics I did turn down, a few could probably go back up, but even so it's running the equal if not better than DR1 now. My expectations were extremely low so totally surprised, it was a genuine joy to play.

The only caveat is where credit is due, the 1.08 or the Steam update. SteamVR talk about CPU optimisations making a difference, Assetto Competizione runs near flawless with a full field of AI now after they did the same with the 1.07, and truth be told No Mans Sky is all but fixed aside from sharp banking at low altitude where it still judders.

Either way we're going places now, DR2.0 is as great an experience as the first was for me.

I've noticed the judder while looking left/right actually gets worse once I go below a certain settings level. It's been mentioned the game runs smoother if you keep the GPU load above 70% but ideally as high as possible. It's a fine balance between judder with lower settings and stutter if the settings are too high.

Yep i'll attest to that, the head movement isn't as it should be. When I drive it's with a steely-eyed focus so it wasn't really a problem, though for those that like to jig the head around it could be quite nauseating.

Might pick this up currently 60% off on steam. Although cm have released super deluxe version now with season 3 and 4 DLC- bit shady

Nice. Hopefully this means I can run it with higher filtering settings. It already looks amazing but some of the "pebbles" in the road look unrealistic and some stages cause drops in FPS.
