Disappointed in the rift

Some have also replaced the padding of the Vive with some sleeping mask to get really big FOV and better focus as well.

I have Heard good things about SS and vive, since I have a 1080 that ill be no problem.

Trust me, the Vive isn't the answer to your problems. The screen isn't as sharp, the focus sweet spot is even narrower, and the headset isn't as comfortable as the Rift.

You can do the same with the Rift in terms of the mask...it really does open up the FOV (I hear you on that one, although it doesn't generally bother me)...I'm hoping it won't be long before we have a third party solution to replace the mask.

I do find it quite funny when people complain about the FoV in the rift or Vive... Coming from a FPV background, all the goggles we flew with were usually around 30 degree field of view. When I got my Dominator HD2's they had a "colossal" 45 degrees.

Rift and Vive are wonders of engineering, 100+ degrees field of view with good clarity across the whole lot is a massive technological achievement. Of course, more would always be better but then the resolution needs to increase just to maintain current pixel density, which as pointed out isn't exactly stellar already.

Don't get me wrong, I do of course agree that higher resolution and bugger FoV would be fantastic, I just think to be so utterly disappointed you must have had some seriously misguided expectations. Personally the resolution bothers me more than the FoV, but neither makes the rift completely unenjoyable... To anyone reading this thread I would definitely suggest getting a demo before leaping in (especially now that the supply chain is easing up), but don't write either the rift or vive off without giving them a go.

Hmm... regarding FOV Vive VS Rift this photo show a whole 10 degrees more for the Vive. If this is right, then I would certainly appreciate the Vive more.

You'll be waiting another 2-3 years for it because the technology isn't there yet to support high-resolution, high-FOV screens with the graphical fidelity and frame rates that are required. We either need a step change in GPU capability, or improved rendering algorithms (e.g. foveated rendering) which in turn require a lot of R&D to get to a consumer level.

Gen 1 is flawed in so many ways, but it's the just the first of many stepping stones. Resolution / FOV is just one part of the whole. Decoupling from the PC (either through wireless technologies or compact battery-powered PCs) is another step, as is tackling the issue of motion sickness. Then there's the tracking, input methods and haptic feedback.

You should really only buy into Gen 1 if you know what you're getting into. IMO it's still worth it, as it literally adds a new dimension to gameplay. I don't care if Elite isn't as pin-sharp as it could be; the immersion is what it's about for me. If you don't experience that immersion, I understand that these experiences can be underwhelming.

Input methods, in as much as moving are going to be a huge challenge. Teleportation simply will not work as a game mechanic in the long run. The various treadmill-like devices show promise, but they are bulky and are another large additional cost.

Well based on my two days of testing so far, I would say to anyone considering buying one, don't. The technology just isn't ready yet.

The potential is there and when you put on the headset you have some very genuine wow moments. But, I have agree with most of what the OP said.

The touch controllers would help a lot with the immersion. My problem, I am not sure I want to keep the rift for that long. I can see that in a month or less, it will be just a big paper weight in the desk, only something to amaze friends/family when they call over.

I agree but my mate likes it so much he is going to have mine, buy a pc just for it and get wheels and pedals setup to use with project cars.

For me it needs to be a much higher resolution, more comfortable and preferably wire free for an enjoyable experience.

No it's not, VR pron is fabulous. The limitations are more than made up by the sense of scale and of "being there."

I don't understand these threads. People know the resolution before they buy, what do they think 1200p is going to look like with your eyes less than 1" away from the screen:rolleyes:

fixed :D
