disaster !!!

Right so ive just tested the psu in a different machine and it works bloody fine !?!?! What the heck is going on here ..... surely it cant be my mobo ?
Let's leave Surely out of this. :p

It could be any of a number of things. Try removing everything from motherboard and test. If it works then add one piece at a time until it doesn't work. And if your luck is anything like mine everything will work and you will never know why it didn't work..

Well when i tested it in the other pc i left everything else plugged in except the 24 pin mobo lead and the fans spin and lights come on etc so surely it can only be the cpu ?

Like saod before the mobo led works so it cant be the mobo

Everything, and don't rule out the PSU.

Take the motherboard out of the case, lay it on a bit of card, have the CPU in, a heatsink on it and 1 stick of memory in. Power up (most newer boards these days have a switch ON the motherboard) and see if you can get it to post or show some signs of life from the motherboard.

If that works, add another stick of memory, rinse and repeat, gradually add each component powering on inbetween.

Ok everythings out of the mobo apart from the 24 pin, cpu, and cpu power cable but still nothing .....

How can i tell if its the motherboard or the cpu ? Dont have any other cpus to test with ?

You are slightly in luck, as you have an option of a relatively cheap motherboard and CPU for testing.

Something like this for the CPU

And look around for a H77 motherboard, something like this.

Open them for test, then return/sell on/keep as you see fit.

Unless you have a mate with a similar socket setup, you could also ask around some local repair places, I've found most will go easy on the excessive charging (as in not charge anything) once they realise you know what your doing :)

To be honest, it sounds like its most likely the mother board in my mind ! All this talk about a new setup is a little ott in my opinion as ive narrowed it down to either the mobo or cpu and its most likely the mobo

It can still be psu,I've seen them work fine on one mb and nothing on another,so I wouldn't rule it out completely

Just a quick question on the side, ive got the psu connected to the mobo and left it switched on and the chipset heatsink is boiling ! Is this normal ? Or a sign of a fried mobo ?
