Disc errors detected on 850 evo

I've owned a Samsung 850 Evo since July 2015. Recently, Windows attempts to run disc repair on each boot, plus when I do an error check within the drive properties it tells me that errors have been found, and security and maintenance in the control panel tells me that errors have been found as well.

Samsung Magician reports drive health as 'good' and I ran Crystaldiskmark and the drive performance was about what I'd expect. Should I be worried about all this and is there anything I can do to fix it? Recently I've been tempted to move to an m.2 nvme such as the WD Black SN750, so maybe this is a good excuse to do it.

first thing I would do is change the sata cable and port, if you still have further issues I would RMA the drive.

I just had to RMA a 850 Evo due to CRC errors reaching 75k and the drive refusing to do anything and in a week I had a replacement 860 in my hands

under the samsing software click on the SMART and it will give you a list of all the information on the drive. the health on my 850 was fine but errors on the smart indicted otherwise

Hi nick,

I feel I should revise my advice - ED209's advice leads me to think that it would be wise to take a more defensive approach. So first thing take a backup of the drive (and yes you could try changing the cables/port). Having said this I do think you should run a Chkdsk as you have nothing to lose and I feel it could well resolve the problem.

I suppose it could be a 'hard' problem with the SSD that is causing the errors you are seeing and if so then yes you should RMA the drive.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've tried running Chkdsk but nothing happens, it just hangs on restart and eventually shuts itself down. I'm going to swap out the sata cable and port as suggested by @ED209 and see if that changes anything. I've also been experiencing some odd behaviour when it comes to shutdown. The computer will often take a couple of minutes to shut down, it will just sit there with a black screen, but the fans and RGB lighting in the system will still be running, so maybe that's connected?

I looked at the Samsung SMART info and it's reporting some ECC and CRC errors, but only 200 and 18 respectively, and the status for everything comes up as 'OK'.

Keep an eye on the crc errors, when you have issues next check again and see if this has gone up.

Samsung will ask you to change port and cable as part of troubleshooting. My crc errors went to 45k and was causing my pc to crash and ssd to become inaccessible. It went off for repair and was ok for another 10 months when it jumped to 75k so went back off for repair when they replaced it for a 860 instead.

My ssd was a storage drive for my games so was not a os drive.

chkdsk hanging - very unusual.

Assuming you can take a good backup, I would run a Secure Erase (using Magician) on the drive, to reset all the NAND to a factory fresh state and then restore the data. I feel this could sort things out.
