Just got my Car back from its Service... its a 2002 Civic 1.4 'Vision' with 37,850 on the clock...

I was told that its gonna need its Brakes doing soon... But not just the Pads (they're about 80% worn), Shoes at the Back are fine, but the Front Discs too!!!... On a Car thats done less than 40,000 Miles!?!?!?!?... Hows it possible to ware em down that fast!!!

I've had cars that have done twice to three times the milage on their original discs before!!!...

Anyhew.. I was quoted £225 fitted by Honda (they did the service).. is that resonable or do you think I could get em done cheaper but not 'Cheaper' if you know what I mean!?!?!

If anyone knows anywere in or around the Swindon Area too!!.. That'd be wicked!! :)

Cheers
Sim. :(

Odds are they are just fishing for more work.

Pop into a local independent mechanic/garage (NOT a franchise like ATS or Kwik-Fit) and ask them to have a quick look - it should take them about 30 seconds to tell you whether you need new discs/pads!

If its done 37k in 5 years then its spent its life doing short journeys around town. This would easily involve in the same number of braking-sessions as an equivilant Civic with, say, 70k on it that had done mostly longer trips.

So it's entirely feasible that it needs new discs.

Yep, its not just the amount of miles, its the frequency of braking and type of braking, its possible to knacker a set of pads after 2 or 3 trackdays, (less than 300 miles) - most of the braking is hard and fast.

40 odd k of driving I'd say is fine for a set of discs, as said it all depends on the type of driving though.

90k but sat on the motorway 99% of the time means the discs will have had an easier life than 40k of town driving.

Best people I know (if they are still there) are Palmers on the Rodbourne Industrial Estate.

If you want rude and poor customer service then yeah go for them. I'd try Alan Watkins next door to them, have only heard good things about them, but then again I suppose any mechanic can be poor to any person, depending on their experience from said company.

I had work done from them and they left the contents of the glove compartment over the front seat, and I found them quite rude.

I was recommended Mike Alan by a relative :) had to go with Palmers due to it being easier/closer, will make the effort to go to MA or AW as i mentioned above if i need work doing again.

In all honesty I don't trust any of the mechanics in Swindon from either bad experiences or from hearing other peoples experiences, I tend to do the work myself if it's not too big a job.

I go through a set of carbon pads every 300-600 miles, tyres every 100-400. disk's about a season at the most. (bike track day and race)

You can't put mileage on wear, depends how you use them so it is definetly feasable, but they may well be fishing for work also unless its had a hard life!

Well I went Mike Alan's this morning... Very Nice Bloke!... really Helpful and friendly :)

He had a lookie at me Discs, and said they've got about 4-6monts life left in em!! (going on my average milage not the previous owners) and the Pads have probly 3-4 months!...

So it does look like Honda were fishing for work (£225quids worth of work! )...

Got Mike to do me a quote!... which I can come back with anytime, he said it'll probly be a few quid more by the time I need it!... But his quote was £165 fitted!!!...

I should be getting a Bonus in 3-4 Months so I'll get em done then! :)

£165 just for front discs and pads on a 1.6 civic? The fitting isnt a huge job, half an afternoon a jack and a socket set and even a total n00b like me managed it. I could've done my car for £60 for mintex jobbies, and I'll have far bigger discs than you i'd imagine, so halve that cost near enough for you. It cost me £150 all round (ie front and rear) for ferodo.

Tom.

haha 165 for front discs and pads? id be expecting some very potent stoppers for that money, which i doubt you are if you expect your brakes to last more than 40k miles

looks to be another rip off
