Discs that resist rust?

One thing I have dislike about my Civic is the amount of rust on the parts of the discs that are not swept by the pads.

I am planning a brake overhaul to include new hoses, discs, pads and fluid along with painting the callipers. Are there any discs out there that resist rust well?

I'm not looking for anything drilled or grooved, just a decent disc that will look good over its lifetime. I have seen compatible discs from the likes of MTEC, Fedoro, Brembo, Pagid and Bosch. Can anyone recommend a particular brand?

I put hammerite round my rear discs they've been fine also.

This, i did that on my wifes old MX5 and it kept it looking nice and fresh. The discs i bought for my Impreza had the same but after a few trackdays it bubbled up and all flaked off due to the heat but for normal driving it'll be fine.

Just put a bit of oil on it then it won't rust:D. On a more serious note, it looks like a 10 mil gap between the used part of the disc and the edge, is that right? On every car I've seen it's more like a couple of mill or is it just the camera angle?

Those pads are not makinfg full contact!

There should be NO rust on the swept part of the disk!

(I am amazed at what seems to be able to pass an MOT these days. I have seen disks with only 10mm of "shiny" metal visible and yet if it passes on the rollers it is just an advisory! )

The hub section can be painted with any heat resistant paint, Washing it first with a phosphoric acid based de-ruster will remove any trace corrosion and prolong the life of the finished surface.

Despite my suggesting the coated discs above, I myself have used the Hammerite method on my current set on the back.

I do wonder whether it'll stand up - but the discs haven't got all that much life in them anyway, so no harm done if it doesn't. It looks good for now.

I suspect the backs will get a lot less heat in them anyway, so melting the paint off seems unlikely. That said, I do keep considering a track day...

Thanks for all the replies guys, really helpful.

Pagid discs come with anti rust coating aswell :)

That's interesting and I have heard a small amount of good feedback regarding Pagid discs and pads on Civinfo. I will look into part numbers 104601818 and 104600488 in more detail. I believe these are the discs to fit my Civic.

I've got the black coated Mtecs; the edges do not rust.

Sure they do.

Bought mine from this guy.

I think it was £136 for all 4 disks for my DC2, I went for plain blanks with silver anti-rust coating. So they look OEM and will stay clean.

Get in touch with him.

As with most car part websites, he stocks far more than he lists on the website.

Freakyparts is quite active on the Civinfo forums and I am aware of them being able to source all the parts I require for decent prices. I may well make use of them for some MTEC plain black discs, EBC Yellow pads (on front, cheaper ones on the back) and some HEL braided hoses. This combo is recommended and shouldn't break the bank.

I wasn't sure whether this was just how the brakes on Civics are!? I will enquire with those that have more knowledge of the car!

The car was purchased at the end of May and passed its MOT with no advisories then...
