disk read error

friend of mine's girlfriend has had a problem with her laptop

when it boots it gets disk read error, am i correct in thinking this is the hard drive?

if it does turn out to be the hardrive is there anyway to retrieve any data off the dead drive?

You could try removing the drive and installing it in another pc as a slave drive see if you can get the data off it that way.

Yeah it's the HDD. If it's Windows 7 then you can boot from a Windows 7 disk into the system recovery menu and open a command prompt which will enable you to run check disk on it. Failing that, take the drive out and hook it up to a desktop PC and run check disk on it that way whilst pulling any important data off the drive at the same time.

cheers guys, i would help him out now but im away with work and he doesnt know anything about computers/laptops. ive told him to take it to a good repair shop and ask the guy there if he can pull any data off.
