display driver stopped responding and has recovered

Ok so at first glance, memory seems ok? Its not been tested for 24hrs or anything though just 1 pass of the tests.

Graphics card is fine with the tests you suggested.

I can't reinstall windows due to bsod....so clearly its hardware not software? Whats left, cpu? motherboard?

I seem to be able to run one instance of eve online at the moment, as soon as i try and open a second it instantly crashes and gives the display error. When I run farcry 2 (steam deal the other night) I can't run it on direct X 10 mode as it crashes instantly, but 9 ran just fine.

I'm at a loss, even my old knackard rig was more stable than this!

Spare RAM to try?

I've got the same 4gb OCZ set that is sitting here waiting for me to send back to ocuk for rma...one stick is faulty though hence the rma. But no other spares...

edit: I should probably point out, on the single working stick of the previous set of ram, the pc was actually a bit more stable, it still crashed with the "display driver stopped working etc" , but I'm pretty sure I didnt get any bsods

Do asus boards have issues with ocz ram despite mem test being ok? I think ill run memtest over night...

I'm wondering if you have more dodgy RAM. I'd be tempted to send it back and get some XMS3

bugger, ok, so you think a set of corsair would be a better option? I used to run gskill in my clocking rigs, is gskill still worth a punt?

G skill certainly isn't value ram. It's all much of a muchness to be honest. Similar price, similar timing and they all offer a lifetime warranty, so it can't be bad. Just go for whatever is cheaper at the time.

It's clearly not the memory if you ran it for that length of time and got no errors.

You have tried reinstalling the OS right? Did you do this by booting from the dvd?

Remove any expansion cards and then try reinstalling windows with one stick of ram in dimm 1, closest to cpu. Disconnect the other hard drive used for storage. Just keep the bear minimum connected.

See how that goes.

this is 100% your graphics card drivers mate....ati will be on 11.5 just now i would imagine so download 11.4 or 11.3 and try them...ati are really bad for this fault i had it when i had a 5970...changing drivers will sort it right out :)

yeah Gskill used to be premium ram that reached amazing frequencies hence the question.

yeh tried reinstalling off the dvd, it would load up up until it shows the windows 7 splash screen then it will bsod....

Ok so I'll try reinstalling again with 1 ram stick, no wireless card, and only the OS drive connected?

Once its all installed, connnect things one at a time?

Sorry I took a while to reply then so didnt see this reply, I'll try this, but it doesn't explain why it bsod's trying to reinstall windows?

this is 100% your graphics card drivers mate......pull the battery from your mobo for a couple of minutes to clear the cmos.....hopefully this will sort out the bsod issues on reinstalling windows....once installed download the drivers from ati/amd site mate not 3d guru....let me know how you get on?

Cammy I've done as you suggested, I've used driver cleaner to remove the old drivers and installed 11.4 ati drivers, and so far iv got 2 eve clients running and so far so good. Ill update if I get any crashes!

What would explain the bsod's when attempting to reinstall windows at the splash screen? I'll not bother with that if its now sorted, but it would be good to be aware of the issue should I need to reinstall and it happens again?

Thank you all for your help, I am very grateful

Cheers

Mike

computers are fickle beasts mate...we all take for granted that the latest drivers are the best and will somehow enhance our machine but it is often not the case... all it takes is the slightest software conflict or corruption to the registry and logic goes out the window....i know for a fact thats its driver issues here and if your machine wont load windows when it did previous then clearing the cmos is almost certainly going to make a difference unless you have hardware failure...which you dont....once again its just ati's crappy drivers....
let us know how you get on fella :)

yeh, I've been out of the game for years now, lost interest about 5 years ago, so getting back into it all is easy enough, just trying to learn which components are as you say "fickle"!

Guess I'll try these old hands at some OC'ing again soon, cant be much harder than socket A, 754/939 im sure :P
