Displaying tax?

That'll make no difference if they're going to do him for not displaying valid tax anyway?

The problem is that rule was put in place before the database was instantly checkable, so the only way to prove your car had tax was by displaying the disk.

The rule really needs to be updated, that said I don't think I've ever heard of someone being fined for not displaying, it the car is indeed taxed.
If you're really worried just print out the confirmation email with reference number so you can show you have purchased a disk a couple of days previously, so it will be obvious to the police that you are genuinely waiting for it to be delivered.

I think you're getting a bit worked up over nothing, I highly doubt the police check every single car for a tax disc, especially when they have ANPR cameras that do all the hardwork for them. If you do get pulled then just explain the situation, surely it will only take a few days for a tax disc to arrive... I know when you renew it they give you 5 days after expiry to display the new disc to allow for delivery times but confirm that you will be taxed during that period still.

No harm in making sure I'm well above board that's all. DVLA have said one thing Police websites don't seem to mention what they said hence confusion.

just make your own with "In the Post" written on it xD 100% legit.

from my limited understanding of it, the only time you are allowed not to have a tax disc displayed is when you've bought the new one before it is up for renewal and only if you've bought it and have to wait for delivery, i.e. not gotten from the post office but online or what not :p

The last 12 months I had the 156 the tax disk holder wouldn't stick to the windscreen any more, disk spent that time in the passenger foot well, never had a problem.

So I've renewed my tax on my 330i today over the phone with DVLA, the car was previously SORN. The woman over the phone advised I could drive the car as I'd broken the SORN. Is this correct seems bizarre to drive around with no tax displayed at all, in my world anyway..

Tom, you really are the biggest sheep ever

I once did 9000 miles in a car with no tax, no registered keeper and wasn't on ASKMID (I had a traders policy)

I drove up and down the country and never once got stopped

Isnt this covered by the exemption for people who have paid online or by phone BEFORE the current tax disc expired? They can drive for 7 days without displaying. Presumably in this case, you applied for a disc before the SORN expired, so surely same thing?

Yes, except it's 14 days AFAIK.

I drove my old 08 plate truck around for months (and about 30k miles) without a valid tax disc displayed, the new one had dropped behind the dashboard and I never got round to getting Scania to find it, eventually I replaced it with the next disc when the old / new one was up!

In that time I'd been stop checked by VOSA and the Police on numerous times (part & parcel of being an HGV driver) and not once did anything get said about the disc, ultimately, the truck was taxed on their "system" and thats all they give a **** about!

Never had a problem myself and I haven't displayed for over a year now.

What reason would you have not to?

As long as the vehicle has valid tax you'll be fine.

This is, of course, rubbish like most of the other posts in this thread. Just because you've not been personally 'caught' doesnt mean its 'fine'. That sort of ridiculous logic could lead to you declaring all sorts of things 'fine'.

Thats like saying driving at 100mph on the M6 is fine because you've done it loads and not been nicked. It's not fine, it's just something you'll often get away with. That doesnt mean you can advise others its fine and there wont be a problem!

The law is fairly clearly - failure to display a valid vehicle excise duty license is an offence. If you get caught, you'll be fined for it. You might not get caught, in which case great, but you might. I must have seen DVLA-tax cameras at the side of the road at least twice so far this year.

So why take the risk? There is absolutely zero benefit to not displaying your disc if you have one.

Tom's situation is different as IIRC because he renewed before the SORN expired he can benefit from the 14 day exemption and legally drive without the tax.

1. You have to move.
2. It's a pointless exercise.
3. I hate dealing with those tax display holders.
4. I end up with fingerprints on my screen.
5. Majority of people don't care.
6. It proves nothing, when was the last time a copper looked at it and said, yes that is taxed and didn't dig any further, they always call in to check manually.

I didn't not do mine as any form of protest or cost saving, I simply forgot to go online and do it and then forgot it had arrived and to put it in my car. If I had been caught I would have expected to getting a telling off and even a fine as it was my fault. My cars are always taxed, insured, MOT'd and serviced but on occasions I miss stuff, like the MX5 MOT that the tax renewal reminded me of when I came to renew it. No excuse, just didn't remember due to being old.
