Having not used displayport before I thought I would give it a try..

I connected my ATI 5970 up to my dell 2408wfp and got nothing to start with until windows loaded and then its 640x480 only.

Is this normal operation for displayport?
 
I couldn't get it to work at all with 5850 crossfire, turned out to be the cable. Once I changed it however, it detected it straight away, no resolution problems .

NO...

I used DP with my 4890 and 5970 with no probs. I do have a HP monitor though.
 
The only difference being I am using a sapphire mini displayport adapter, the cable came with the dell monitor.
 
It appears that the displayport adapter is not native (e.g you cannot see any other resolution other than 640x480)

Anyone else here got a Dell 2408WFP and using displayport?

I'm thinking the same thing.. I have nothing else to verify the cable works correctly :(
 
im using a 2408 with DP and works fine at 1920x1200

im on a 5870 tho with the dell supplied cable plugged direct into the gfx card

Display Port does seem picky in certain situations, especially the mini DP adaptors, the apple one's especially seem to give people massive grief when used with PC products. It cost me £50 in cables to sort which I really could have done without.

Which version of 2408WFP is yours? this is a A00.

And I think yours is not using the mini displayport adapter?
 
have a gander on anandtech. there's a long thread there about this and people have tried various adapters.
 
Damn, I'm already waiting for the price to come down on the 5970, may as well wait for them to stick a proper displayport on there by the sounds of things...
