Dissertations - Uni

what exacly is a dissertation?
Dissertation

Mines about 9,500 at the minute. I've got one major section left to do and that's about it. I'm only supposed to have 10k, so I think I'll have to go through it and try and remove non-essential things.

I'm sure this will change according to different courses and tutors, but after i handed in my draft (of which i printed on both sides of the paper), my tutor pointed out that all new sections should start on a right hand side page. When i was trying to figure out how exactly you can be sure of that ( ) i was talking to some of my colleagues on MSN (same Uni, same course, one wiht my tutor and another with a different tutor) and they both said to print single-sided. Does anyone know whats recommended?

I'd like to do as my tutor said as she's marking the thing, plus printing both sides imo makes it look more professional, more readable like a book.

Single sided is better I think, on the back of each of my pages I've just got a little heading in grey saying "Notes"

Oddly, my research and design dissertation is 20 page limit and not words, due in 10 days. Since Im doing an architectural based one, I have loads of images and my word count is 5K over 15 pages. 5 remaning pages are for a concept I have drafted, although I have no willpower to finalise.

Does it say it has to be A4 pages? You coud have A3 pullouts.

Mine's at around 7k at the moment, it's due in May 22nd.
Still got 2 sections to write and my main concern is that I'll go over the word limit because I can still think of so much more to write :o So looks like I'll be doing a fair bit of editing.
On track with it though :)

I'd do what your lecturer asks. If it makes it easier for them to mark then I wouldn’t be too bothered.

I have guidelines to stick to so that my report can be easily printed out and binded by the Uni printing services. Couldn't be simpler.

In that case how do i make sure the start of each new section is on a right hand side page? Count them? lol  (Apologies for clearly lacking in some common sense here... :()

I have 3 files. First part which is everything up to my first main chapter - numbered i, ii, iii etc... Then the main body which is numbered 1, 2, 3 etc. Then my references seperately.

Well if you print single sided, as asked, they will be. You won't be using the back of the paper, which would be the left as you look in a book.

just broke the 20,000 word barrier

its due in next monday (24th)... this is not going to be a fun week...

No thats the thing. Everyone else seems to insist theyve been told to print single sided, whereas when i handed my draft in i'd printed double sided. She didnt mention anyhting, instead said simply to make sure that new chapters started on a right hand side page. I would email and ask, but i think she's done a runner for Easter!

This might sound criminally simple, but... when you've finished it, go through it on the screen and make sure all new sections start on an odd-numbered page. If any of them start on an even-numbered page then insert a blank page in there. Done.

What word processors are people using? Up until last year I used MS Word for everything, but now I'm a complete LaTeX convert. For typing up formal documents or lengthy projects like a dissertation it's better than Word in almost every way, especially if it's a science or maths paper.

What are people's dissertations on, too? It can't just be me that's interested!

My title is:

"Digital Cinema: An investigation into the adoption of digital technology to replace film distribution and exhibition in cinemas around the globe"

I'm using OpenOffice which for the price (;)) is great! It was a bit of a hassle because to start with i used the .odt (OO) file format at home and kept exporting to Word when needed. Then i discovered it was a lot easier to simply work with a .doc file format. For printing i always export to PDF anyway. Tis nice :)

..and yes, AF, that does sound like the best way :p

Just did mine in Word and printed it - it wasn't difficult. The dynamic index feature is especially useful for large docs like these, you do NOT want to index manually

I still use word for mine.

As long as you use it properly (set all heading to heading 1, 2 or 3 etc and set styles of each heading level), use placeholders for the header and footer that put in section titles and page numbers, and change the paragraph settings so it starts a new page for a new section then it all turns out looking pretty nice.

As above, make sure you use the auto index/contents stuff, you don't want to be messing about doing it by hand.

I've been doing it this way since at secondary school, but it's amazing even in the final year of a Computing and Management degree the number of people who cannot even use word to it's full potential.

I've got a few thousand words to go now :)

For our report we have a handbook which gives us guidelines as to how to do the report, doesn't anyone else have this? It tells us things like, margin sizes, text sizes, etc...
