Dissertations - Uni

:(

I hate dissertations! Just doing mine, got to hand it in for the 10th May.

Done soo much work, but it still dont seem enough. I have so much information in my head, but i am struggling soo hard to get it onto paper.

If only i could hand mine in verbally!

(i'm doing an incar computer peice of software tightly intergrated with windows so i can load it with windows embedded. Hopfully having the entire O/S and my software which can load from a CD. Doing computer Science btw)

What are people's dissertations on, too? It can't just be me that's interested!
I'm going to be exceptionally lazy and cut and paste my little write up on my site about what it is :o My excuse is I've been away all weekend and explained it to half a dozen people in 3 days as it is :p

Dissertation: Hyperidentities within MMORPGs

So you actually care what a hyperidentity is? :P
Well *deep breath* hyperidentity is a term created by Miroslaw Filiciak a Croatian Ph.D student (presumably he’s now a Doctor as the book I was reading containing his essay is a few years old now).
Basically it’s an extension of another concept, hyper-reality, which was concieved by the postmodern media theorist Jean Baudrillard (who pops up quite a bit when it comes to weird sounding theories and philosophies).
Hyper-reality basically means that it is no longer possible, in a media-saturated world, to distinguish between what is real and what is not. Hyper-reality, therefore, is a situation in which nothing and everything is ‘real’; it is a situation in which we have lost the ability to distinguish reality and fiction.
Think of The Matrix, the idea of you think you’re in the real world but you’re not actually and after a while you lose track of what’s real and what’s not.

Hyperidentity is a bit like this but more personal. You lose track of what your real identity is and what your ‘other’ identity is, i.e. in this case, your game identity. You play MMORPGs for so long that you ‘become’ your game identity, which in some people’s case can be hugely different from their ‘regular’ identity.

Now, throw in a hint of Castells (yet another postmodern theorist) who believes that we live in a network society, and when you throw in MMORPGs, that our identity is defined by our relation to the internet instead of the family, the clan, the tribe or nation which is a mahoosive (to use a very technical term :P ) shift from where we used to be as a society.

And just to round off the recipe, I’m throwing in some Jung and a look at the idea of persona and how it affects us all.

There's a bit more to it but that's just the round up :)

^ Sounds really interesting, but just how relevant is it? Surely the number of people who really have lost a sense of what is real and what isn't is miniscule? Is it not an incredibly rare phenomenon?

Not trying to have a dig, but I'm genuinely interested!

It's not really entirely about people who have lost the concept of reality. It's more to do with how they've affected people.
For example: South Korea have a specific online gaming crime unit because there's been incidents where people have murdered each other over MMORPGs....

I suppose it's more of a sociological look at how it's affecting society, the relationships formed from them and things like fetishisation. The problem is there's so much to write, it's really easy to lose track of everything :o

Really it's a concept that could be extended to anything online, such as a forum for example and whether it affects our viewpoint gradually over time.

http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/ has some great stuff on the psychology behind it all.

I still half wonder if maybe one day something like the Matrix could become possible though, there's already some people that practically live their lives through a game (on Everquest 2 you can even order pizza from within the game in the US!) and I'm sure some of those people would want to just escape permanently to that world.
Suppose it'll come down to supply and demand. I don't see it happening in our lifetime anyway.

Edit: Erm, apologises for the ramble :o

He, he, did you read that article on bbc news online about the gay/transgender groups on MMORPG's getting stick from the games creators for forming groups :D

Yeah. The game devs had to apologise didnt they?

I remembered what i was gonna ask everyone else; Are you putting your tutor in your acknowledgements section? I assumed i would, but my tutor said not to. Again, i'm gonna do what she says but i was just wondering if that was the norm for everyone else?

Errm hate to put a cloud over the people doing dissertations this year, but do you realise unless the pay dispute is sorted then the dissertations won't be marked, and neither will any exams.

I suggest you read http://www.aut.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=1519 - especially the actions reports, and the guidelines,

basically, no exams being created, no work marked during industrial action, and no work officially handed out during it

No problems there for me as none of my lecturers are striking. Got an email about it recently.

Best part of 4 weeks left for my Thesis on a routing algorithm.

Thats why I am on the internet, not working, 4 weeks baby :D

The BEng boys thesis is due in tomorrow :p

What word processors are people using? Up until last year I used MS Word for everything, but now I'm a complete LaTeX convert.
LaTeX for me (TeXnicCenter), its my first time using it really, and I reckon I've got to grips pretty well! however, I do type up sections in Word, then copy and paste them into the LaTeX terminal window. Word is less "busy" and keeps my head clear in a strange way (even thought I still type all the TeX commands in it ;)).

Look into Lyx. It's basically a WYSIWYG editor for LaTeX and I've found it to be brilliant and more manageable than using TeXnicCenter :)

Since everyone else is doing it... I've been used Latex Editor (LEd) to type mine, which I think is spangly and lovely and does everything I want it to. I don't really expect anyone who's been using TeX for a while to change, since I'm far too used to this to switch now, but it's worth it if anyone is just starting out. Site seems to be down at the moment, but it might be back up later...

I have not started mine yet and it's due in 6 days. I've got most of my results data, but i have so many other assignments to do for other modules + goto lectures + revise for 6 exams.

I'm struggling at the moment :(

As much as they would like you to think that they are disrupting every uni, I dont know of anyone out of my many friends who are at different unis who have been affected.

*rant mode*

Those who do go on strike are quite frankly idiots.

They are paid to be acedemics (i.e: paid to do research into topics they are supposed to find interesting). How on earth can you go on strike when you have that kind of job, especially since if they were actually good at what they did they would make a fortune on the side. About half my lecturers are extremely rich / have a load of very impressive patents for stuff that they were paid to research. The person I've applied to do my Phd under founded acorn computers amonst many other things. . .You dont see that kind of 'real' acedemic lecturer going on strike do you.

They think they can try and ruin the education you are paying for because they only get paid 30 grand a year?! Tell them to **** off.

Here Here!

My lectures are on strike, had a word with them, they are still marking work, just not releasing the results. And they have said that it would not affect our graduation. (i think they will release the results soon!)

How late has everyone left it to produce their dissertation?

I have approx 4 weeks left to write 10,000 words..

The questions is...how late did you leave yours before you realised you had to start.... for all you previous students?

10,000 words in 4 weeks is nothing, unless you have done no research or other work. If that is the case then you are screwed... you had at least one year to do this, no sympathy.

I have written longer reports for work.

I totaly agree with this as well. None of my lecturers are on strike either (Comp Sci).
