Dissertations - Uni

lol sorry dude :p

As for journal articles......does your uni have an electronic library at all that you can get stuff from? I'm pretty sure taht ours used to list whitepapers etc. so at least we had some sort of idea of what we could actually get hold of.

Have you looked in food/nutrient books etc. Even psychology books. Not necessarily for the information contained in that book but I often found that if you follow an authors reference's you can find much more information. Try to follow the trail of info between books and you can pick up a lot of information along the way in my experience :) Nothing concrete for ya but good luck all the same.

Great advice mate, that is what i planned to do. I'm going to take a look at our online electronic library, but the problem is...there is no full text articles, and its usually a) either a complete ball ache tracking them down or b) expensive articles.

I have literally 19 PDF's on my Laptop at the min with journal articles around the topic, so i'm on the right track!

Cheers PeterNem also, Just reminded me to check athens!

I'm quite enjoying mine at the moment. I had a project update presentation the other day with a load of other people, and the state of some other people's project was depressing. You could tell they didn't have a clue and had thrown together some research and results at the last minute. Made me feel a whole lot better about mine :)

About 5000 words done so far, and just about completed my software implementation. Only another 10,000 words to go. Sounds a lot, but if you've done the initial preparation and research, it really isn't.

What exactly are you doing for your dissertation then?

I'm looking at the efficacy of a fungus which kills mosquitoes. Its hoped it'll take over from the chemical sprays used on bednets and inside houses in Africa to kill mossies and stop them vectoring malaria. I'm looking at how effective it is against different sizes of mosquitoes.

Right...

Hmm, this a pretty independant study then or have other people done similar things?

Dissertations...heard a lot about them but what actually can they be about? I mean, just a huge investigation or are you set an essay type question?

Independant investigation.

Hypothesise, talk about literature related to subject matter, collect primary data, compile, conclude and discuss.

yeah, few of my m8s at uni are talking about theirs, what ARE they? like a document that you just write about somthing? like the effect of popular culture on animated films etc?

It's based on some research that was done last year by the lab I'm attached to, so its pretty novel. They're really hoping this might be a genuinely effective way of augmenting or replacing DDT and pyrethroid chemicals currently used to control malaria vectors, because they're developing resistance pretty fast.

If your Uni has access to Science online then have a look at the following papers if you're interested (the first is by my supervisor).

Blanford, S. et al. 2005. Fungal pathogen reduces potential for malaria transmission. Science 308, 1638-1641.

Scholte, E-J. et al. 2005. An entomopathogenic fungus for control of adult African malaria mosquitoes. Science 308, 1641-1642.

Lol. Wait till you have to do a dissertation, you'll get used to having conversations with people who nod and smile a lot and have no clue whatsoever what you're talking about!

Off topic, where in Cornwall are you from? Truro is home for me these days.

crofthandy

I'm never going to have the plesure of doing a dissertation, only reason I've got C in english is because I retook and my then GF had just done A level english and got an A.
always loved english lit, was rubbish at the bits that didn't involve me just reading.

mines a project

the project is only about 65% complete, but the report is where all the marks is, they give a guidance of around 12,000-15,000 words, ive done 2,000 and thats just n intro and background so im gonna whizz past that i rekon

Due 24th march, but i also got 2 exams and a 3,000 word case report to do, and im onyl at uni 4.5 days a week as i have to work the rest :(

Kinda getting me down atm, but i kinda already have a job lined up anyway - but still....

Ah well all will be handed in and done before i hit Vegas ;)

I had a 6,000 word dissertation last year, and have a 10,000 word "Final Year Project" this year. I've got nothing written down, apart from a 3000 word "progress report" from which I can chop some words etc. However, I'm still working on the meat of the project so the write up can happen over easter 'holidays'

I'm seeing my supervisor today finally 2 weeks after my project started. I know what the area is, but I don't know how much I have to write, and being quite a large and in places very hard subject I'd like to know more specifically what I should be looking at!

My dissertation is just 8000 words, feel right out of my depth and have no interest in it whatsoever. I have done about 2500 words so far which is mainly a literature review and introduction. Aiming for a 2:1 so I get a 2:1 overall, no one is really taking their dissertation seriously that I know of.

Mine is due in on 14th March. Completely lost interest in it though (due to starting a stressful new realationship). Done 15K words (19K inc appendicies) for it so i'm not in the worst situation but i just can't be bothered with all the touching up required. I should get at least 60% out of it but if i don't get over 70% i'll be disapointed. Can't wait for it all to be over. :(
