Dissertations - Uni

Then I'm done as I haven't got any exams.

I'm not at all jealous. Honestly!!

Still, my exams are squashed into a really short period (3 exams in 4 days), and I'll be done on the 1st of June :) so not too long really.

I have a long summer of nothing much at all in front of me (wehey!!) and a couple of holidays planned. Need to make the most of it as I start work in October.

on placement this year but one of my housemates has just completed 7000 words in 8 days. he also thinks that most of it is bull poo

I've spent the whole day in Uni today getting mine printed out, organising it and then having it binded. Cost a pretty penny to at £43 for two copies including binding. It's a huge relief to have it done and out the way until my Viva.
It's bound, not binded.

As I failed to learn when getting my dissertation bound

"Hi, do you know where I can get my dissertation binded"
"You mean bound?"
"errr yes"
"one second (asks assistant where one can get their thesis bound)"
"go to the document something or other room"
"Ok where's that"
"Next to periodicals"
"where's that"
"Near the short term loan room"
"Where's that"
"Have you ever been through that door before?"
"no"
"ok go through there, bleh bleh bleh"

Get to the room
"Hi, I'd like to get my dissertation binded please"
"You mean bound?"
"Errr yes"

:)

And I can be jealous of you having a much more exciting summer than me ahead of you :p

Argh I'll never forget the couple of days (and the day!!) last year when I had to hand in my dissertation- some of the most nerve wracking and worrying days of my life! Looking back, I was very lucky to get it in OK too!

I didn't get my program running 'til about 18 hours before the deadline.
I then stayed up all night the night before it was due in, almost had a heart attack when my computer froze for 2 minutes at about 4AM, threatening to wipe out everything I had done that night!!

I stopped writing at 7AM, checked I had everything in order, went home, had a shower and had to convert the whole thing to PDF as something was corrupted in my document which meant it would not print properly. (I had never even attempted a PDF conversion at this stage so anything could have happened!)

I went back to the library at 8AM with it in PDF format on my memory stick, printed of 10 test pages (It printed OK thank God!!!)

I then spent an hour burning my sample application to CDs for my final copies, copied the whole thing to my memorystick again, and to a borrowed one, and emailed it to myself (just in case!), and headed off to town to get it printed.

I turned up at the printers at 9:30 (luckily I was first one in there!) and it took me until 2PM to print and bind 3 copies properly (about 140 pages each), paid £70 for the privelege, and handed it into uni 1h:30min before the deadline.

I got a recommended mark of 81% from my tutor and an overall of 78% so it all turned out OK in the end!

Anyway I digress good luck to everyone for results day and I hope your dissertation went more smoothly than mine! :)

Touch wood, I've never needed to do an all nighter....maybe that comes for my Masters :p

I've only had to do once. I had a module which was 100% coursework assessed in my 2nd year. Starting writing the report the day before it was due in. finished at 7am and biked straight to the department to hand it in. Was home and in bed by 8!

Amazingly at 80% it was one of my highest marks of Uni.... not sure how!

I struggled to get 1000 words a day, and even after that I would get a headache. I seriously laboured over every word in every sentence and cannot believe how people can churn out a huge word count in a short period of time. I guess it depends on the nature of your project. Mine was a lot of literature reading and referencing sprinkled over a detailed walkthrough of the numerous steps in my analysis. I'm so glad its handed in and done now.
Currently on my last piece of coursework - a 2 page report, what a contrast!

I don't understand how people can do a lengthy project like a dissertation in a short period of time either. I spent at least two to three weeks reading before I even put pen to paper (or fingers to keys) and then I was constantly revising and rewriting sections of it. It's still not really finished now, as there are sections which I mean to have a last look at and see if they can be explained more lucidly. Still, isn't there a famous saying... "A work of art is never finished, it is merely abandoned"?
