Hi - does anyone know, on a MkII diesel focus, roughly how many litres of fuel will be in the tank when the 'distance to empty' guage says 0 miles?

On old diesel engines running out of fuel used to cause serious engine problems. I know on modern VW diesels that it can automatically rectify the issue but have Ford Engineered that in too?

Thanks,

Sam

I've never found them to be accurate at all, managed 30+ miles in the Leon with the distance-till-empty guage showing "0".

I miss my old VW that the fuel light would come on when there were exactly 2 gallons in the tank. It didn't have a distance to empty but it did have a trip computer with average MPG. The audible 2 gallon fuel light would come on. Reset the odometer to 0, reset the MPG to 0. When odometer reads twice MPG, I knew I had 0 fuel. It used to do well over 50mpg so I could get over 100 miles after the light came on. It was 100% accurate, I ran until I calculated that I had about 5 miles left once and the capacity of the tank was meant to be 55 litres, the fuel nozzle clicked once, left the fuel to settle, then put the rest in and I got 55.01 litres in total!

It sounds petty but when running between Edinburgh and Southampton at fairly high speed you want as much range as possible!

On the ST i have managed 3-4 miles on 0, it managed to get me to a fuel station.

Easiest solution is to slap some fuel in :p

I get nervous when the warning display comes on (under 30 miles remaining) and head straight for Morrison's to top up.

The Audi A8 on Top Gear went quite a way on "empty", didn't it?

I find those counters scary. When I was on holiday the hire car had one, we went from country roads to the m'way. After 50 km on the m'way our distance left had increased by another 50km .

Of course it did... it's calculated from your recent MPG figure.

(Or were you joking and do I now look like a fool? :p)

My A6 makes an extremely loud "beeeeeeep" and displays "please refuel" on the dash at 50 miles remaining. That's plenty low enough for me so it's off to the pumps. Always safer to have some in reserve IMO.

i never trust the gauge or the light on my car, mostly because, in the average trip to work the fuel gauge will read higher at the end of the journey....gaining fuel, now thats a neat trick :p

when its on perminantly ill fill up though, as its usually at this point im driving past a station anyway
