You need to be subscribed to read the full article but essentially he has been jailed for refusing to pay a divorce package of £27.5k p/w. he has hidden his assets (he denies this) to avoid paying.

Personally I say fair play to him! What is the justification for someone "needing" 27.5k p/w to live off. It's greed on her behalf just wanting money so she doesn't have to work again.

I'm all for a fair divorce settlement which means the divorcee and child can live comfortably, even well, but no way they need that much. It's in no way justifiable.

Thoughts?

He shouldn't be jailed for this. Greedy money grubbing wife of his deserves nothing if she won't budge on 27.5k p/w. That's ridiculous.

I'd of said fair play too, although if he has a fortune of 400 million and not signing a prenup etc then its his own fault. Offer a one of payment?

It really depends on the circumstances. How long were they together, do they have children etc.

You can't have a prenup in the UK. Marriage is marriage.

I dont know the full details but if she has been married a while and has kids then she will be entiled up to 50%. He is saying that he has lost it all in some sort of Russian deal and can not afford to pay the 30k a week. He has to man up to his responsibilities and support his ex and kids in a life style that they are used to. I would imagine that lifestyle is expensive to maintain.

That smells of bull, I reckon he's hidden offshore and just refusing to pay, which in the case I would say fair play. But he could have lost it.

Nobody needs this much per week, and it should be 0 if you've got no kids even if youve been together for x long and he's supported you for x. hard line !

£27,500 per week? Is it child support for a ****ing orphanage?

That's not the point. If they were together long she will have supported him and the family in a way only a wife could. She is part of his financial successes, and the whole family deserve to benefit from it. If they've been married only briefly then you could argue possible not.

According to my gf, who is a barrister, you can. :(

There have been a handful of instances where a prenup has carried any weight at all in the UK. Generally they mean squat. I hope your gf isn't a divorce barrister .

Wiki said:
Prenuptial agreements have historically not been considered legally valid in the United Kingdom. This is still generally the case, although a 2010 Supreme court test case between the German heiress Katrin Radmacher and Nicolas Granatino,[2] indicated that such agreements can "in the right case" have decisive weight in a divorce settlement.[3] The Law Commission is due to consider whether a change should be made to the letter of the law, recognizing prenupts in a more general way; they will report on the matter in 2012.

Depends.

If they were together since they were kids and she supported him going out to earn a living, one could argue shes entitled to something. I'm not a big fan of marriage being the deciding factor though.

You can have them but it's totally up to the court whether to follow them or not. Generally they will if they think it's fair, and won't if they don't, apparently.

So just because you were married to a rich man you're entitled to a footballers wage?

Yes, if the circumstances are right. Generally they would be entitled to live a similar lifestyle as if they were still married.

Don't like it?

Don't get married.

Which is why she is entitled to 50% of his assets. Why should she be entitled to live that kind of lavish lifestyle he provided for her when she wants rid of him? Just smacks of being a greedy sod.

says per MONTH not p/w in article.

here's one you dont need to login for

My bad, more than the national average wage per month is much more acceptable. :p

As part of the cash he owes is for School fees for his 2 daughters I'd say he's out of order. If he paid for his daughters & denied his X untold cash then it would be different.

I agree completely but as he clearly fiddling he would probably struggle to free up assets for and not the other without opening himself to having the lot taken.

The kids should be looked after, the wife should be supported but not given a free ticket on the gravy train fir life merely for being his wife. If she's that desperate for the life stay with him (if possible)

I just don't understand how being married to someone basically entitled you to stupid money for life. (if they are rich) If he is actually hiding the money and is willing to go to jail over his principles respect to him, I think I would though I'll doubt I'll ever be rich enough to test the theory :p
