I have recently dropped a 2TB Seagate Barracuda mechanical hard drive. Since this the state of the drive is - it can be detected but no files can be read and most operations are impossible from what I can tell.

I had the possibly terrible idea of buying the same model again and transferring the platters from old to new.

Has anyone attempted this? I'm guessing that this is risky business but if it worked the price of recovery goes from hundreds to the price of the new hard drive which seems to be around £70.

Unless you have a Clean Room in your house / office, I would not recommend this [note the capitalization].
Given the microscopic tolerances inside the hard drive, I still would not recommend this.

If you were going to attempt it, I'd say buy a secondhand drive, and if you are successful with the "transplant", copy everything off it to another new drive as soon as possible.
