Accurately simulating a massive, diffuse light source like a cloudy sky, is fantastically expensive, and why the neural rendering approach looks so massively improved....same in general with any ambient lighting, the ambient occlusion is vastly better done with NR than any traditional techniques, it's the single biggest improvement from this tech. These cloudy scenes in GTA4 and Cyberpunk PT always seem to make them look really good I think its a trick of the lighting or something, but yeah impressive tech, if you don't like it you can disable it etc, pick a dlss version.
The main problem is the GPU raster gains are slowing gen on gen, thats a hard problem, not an easy one, if it were easy AMD or Intel would counter and make a faster GPU, so they are bringing in more features/tools like ray/path tracing, dlss etc and yes it sucks, we want more raster before anything else, raw compute. But it's shifting, and now AI etc. But then again what makes a game fun, for me I'd rather have a RDR2/GTA world over Cyberpunk, sell the world and gameplay first then make it look pretty second.
I did think there were some Cyberpunk nods in the GTA6 trailer, the detailed close up of the guy on the phone, we see his face, teeth, hair, eyes, I was impressed. So even if a game might not manage to pull off the sandbox gameplay they sure did a great job at raising the high fidelity bar with Cyberpunk.
Yeah I think this one impressed me the most out of the few I tried. I feel games that are maybe a little dated now and have a realistic aesthetic seem to get the most benefit. Last of Us Part 2 was also really impressive but I only tried it for a little bit.
I've liked trying it out in more modern games like RE9 and Resonance, but they don't 'need' it so much and the experience isn't a whole lot different.

Haha yeh and probably make people more angry with NvidiaI bet the 6000 series has some sort of new hardware level features that can accelerate this better than current gen hardware.
The smaller die size and whatever else they do 'should' be a big upgrade. Nodoubt they will limit the advancements to make more money and slow the process. Its going to be a disaster at the consumer level, zero availability and eye watering prices.

Will be leasing gfx cards at this rate. Initial payment then PCP for 3 years then a balloon payment at the end. We'll find out in 2028 and for that privilege the MSRP will be £2999 with shops quickly scalping it at £3999, followed by raising the price to 4999, then before we know it they'll be at £9999.

I really hope not. If it goes the way of tv/movie streaming where you can only "rent" Movies from multiple platforms then I will just stick to retro gaming.I genuinely think the end goal is to make everything so expensive that cloud subscription services become the only viable way, At that point I'll opt out.
I know it’s the flavour of the month to bleat about having to rent things…..but last time I checked, you’re still free to buy all your music, books, films etc on physical media if you choose to.I really hope not. And here we go, master of the strawman strikes againHope is clear now since you've gave yourself the answer!
Yes, graphics don't matter, that's why all the people only play on 1080p, fsr ultra performance (since amd has the cheapest cards) at... don't know, is 60fps good for gameplay? Or should we say 30fps, since GTAVI is targeting that. (...)

What strawman exactly? And here we go, master of the strawman strikes again![]()
I guess Sony forgot the legendary Steam riots of the late noughties when PC physical media died off and gaming went digital and everyone was up in arms….Yes, for now! But have you not seen what Sony are planning for PS5 games then? No discs boyo.
This is how 'the theys' do it though - make everything gradually too expensive and / or annoying. They don't just jump to the end goal but do it in incremental steps so it's not too jarring for the normie masses. People will whine about it online but they will eventually concede if they want their bread and circus. It's basic (evil) psychological technique, but some also call it the Totalitarian Tip Toe...

That I can only fully agree with.Game dev is a constant struggle to improve the smoke and mirrors to achieve the desired visual experience.
Continuing to brute force rendering with more and more ‘accurate’ simulation models is daft when machine learning models can achieve the same results with less horsepower.
If only it wasn't such an FPS killer though with "Best to be used together with PT" approach by NVIDIA. On the plus side, this could spark another competition and with time it might give birth to something more performant or in-engine hardware-agnostic approach. Only time will tell.Yes DLSS5 needs a lot of grunt, but the visual fidelity far exceeds what I guess we have to call programmatic or deterministic rendering.
Ye, it's not the idea in itself that is the problem, it's what it entails (faster, new, more expensive GPUs instead of speeding things up). Now, baby steps - fine from engineering standpoint. Reaction of some people though, amazingly overblown IMHO. Reminds me of beginnings of LLMs on the market and the whole "OMG, IT THINKS! It's a miracle, IT'S ALIVE!" - that came out even from actual engineers working on those models and it's hilarious in the hindsight. As a solo dev it’s very interesting to me what I might be able to achieve visually with a limited budget.
