DLSS 5 preview

This might be a stupid question but is there any chance the price of 5080s/5090s will increase because of this being exclusive to them ? Im wondering if I should just buy one now or get one around the time DLSS 5 is released.

@GordyR

Here you go.

A-to-B.png

Its all over the place over 7 screenshots, 7 similar looking but different people

I have absolutely no idea what it is that you’re seeing, that I’m not.

These look like seven perfectly consistent screenshots of the same character, with her eyes opening and shutting to varying degrees while she turns her head away from the light.

It’s late and I’m looking on my phone, so I suppose it’s possible I’ll see something else on my monitor tomorrow morning, but based upon this viewing alone, seriously, if this is what people are calling “AI slop” and “worse” then I’m at a complete loss.

Do you have the same time-stamped screenshots of the non DLSS 5 versions for comparison?

So will this be the big feature for the 60 series? I know the demo was running on two 5090s, but I'm guessing the 60 series will get something that accelerates the workload better.

We dont know. What you do want is compression and all the promising tools available to enable real time rendering. It will though, absolutely run better on the newer hardware. Prey its not more locked in features though.

I'd recommend cycling through the gallery. There's distinct inconsistency.

We only have what they've chosen to show. And curiously not much fast camera movement/panning or character model movement in the few seconds of clips which focus on faces.

Some of these replies remind me of Rollo,et al vs world arguments decades ago. What a sense of Deja Vu. Eek!

We dont know.

What we will know is hardware enthusiasts will overhype everything and argue about it for 10000 pages. Then when the reality happens, argue about that for another 10000 pages. We all probably have done this on here at some point! :p Then something like FIFA5000,COD27 or BF One Million sells tens of millions of examples with most people running them on potato hardware(by the standards of enthusiasts).

The more you buy,the more you are unhappy!

I can see two reasons to get a new GPU here.

Man of culture I see!

I both dislike and like DLSS 5 from what I saw. But leaning towards like mostly just for the memes it's spawned

The typical generic looking "photo realistic" AI characters that don't fit into their enviroments anymore. The original character art is designed to fit within the design of the worlds art, these no longer do.

I also think this will fall apart when motion starts to speed up just like DLSS used to or still slightly does to a much much lesser degree.

They always used to show off DLSS with slow walking parts and slow camra panning because when you start whipping the camera around and running around enviroments it would then produce the artifacting and ghosting. I want to see what happens to these when characters are bouncing around and not just standing there still for their close up shot.

It is actually very hard with the way 3D is rendered to actually take that last step in photorealism on human and similar characters no matter how high detail your character model and textures, etc. are - it is one area where using reconstruction in post-processing working directly on screen makes sense if the final results are consistent.

That Cyberpunk screenshot is very high detail but it doesn't look real.

Photorealism has to be achieved within the context of the medium and there will be a lot be said about that, but until we know more and can test this, I'm not going to go much into it.
However, first, we need to see how many characters like this can be had on screen at the same time. One or two doesn't mean much.

I'd wait and see how it goes.

Could be this, could be a significant improvement of this or something else entirely. If nVIDIA only had this as a major update, it makes sense they would have kept it hidden and work on it until the 6xxx series. Then it would have been a major selling point.

I wouldn’t read too much into the ‘drama’ tbh. It’s making a lot of internet noise because it’s absolute gold for memes.

I’ll get the new SDK soon as it’s out and produce some demos, for science!

My 5080 is gonna cry, buy maybe a good excuse to expense a 5090, hmm.

I don’t have RE9 but does Grace’s face textures and lighting in game actually look that flat and lifeless as in the DLSS5 off images they “improved”? I ask because the game footage I see on YouTube looks nothing that flat and lifeless.

Are we seeing the usual marketing trick of taking the worst to highlight the improvements?

Obviously marketing mate. They used lowest settings for her face.

Jensen confirms DLSS 5 is using generative AI

He then goes on to say gamers are all wrong for calling it AI slop

Clue is in the name….deep learning. Yes it is AI. It’s taking two images, one the raster output, one the motion buffer (motion vectors expressed as RGB) and using deep learning techniques to create a new image that is probably multiplied with the original to adjust the lighting each pixel.

Many game developers will not use this, as it means your game and artistic intent look different depending on hardware... not resolution but actual artistic direction.
Even if they can control it, it *cannot* look the same on different hardware.

The only companies using this will be those who already do not care.

Grace looks very different in Raster vs. Path Tracing - nevermind dlss5.

Artistic directions is rather... broad.

Not the same thing, as that is all based upon the lighting that the artists put in place. It may be a difference, but it's not changing the actual geometry/art.

DLSS5 is allowing just that. Any hardware *could* replicate the path tracing. They could not replicate the same image that DLSS5 presents because it *makes it up*.
