Do Americans know....

What?

Do You actually think we generally hate the Americans?

for goodness sake.

Maybe not you personally, but yes, in general English people usually have something bad to say about Americans. As I said, my wife is American so I have seen it first hand - much more in the North than the South.
The usual stereotype is that they're loud and obnoxious when nothing could be further from the truth when I take into consideration the Americans I have met when we go over to see my Mrs's parents.

So don't 'goodness sake' me unless you live with it.

Even on these forums there are much more comments about 'crazy, loud, stupid' Americans that there are about Americans being actually very nice.

Also, I like Discus fish and those little neon thingy's.

I always laugh when Americans say "Speak English!" to foreigners, because American English isn't even English, and American Stereotypes of us English isn't even accurate, I guess thats why it's a Stereotype lol.

American English is about an English as American Cheese is like cheese.

Can't wait to go to America in April

"What state is England in?"
"Are you from Australia?"

Just a few of the stupid questions I'm expecting

Holy, hypocritical stereo type thing batman.

Holy, hypocritical stereo type.

How am I being hypocritical? I honestly need that explaining to me.

Everything I said has come from experience, not just guessing that most people are this way (i.e Stereotyping).
In fact some are really nice and we've made friends with people just having the old chestnut "what part of America are you from?" icebreaker, followed by the customary blank stare when she tells them because I don't think there are too many people with a working knowledge of America - least of all me.

The majority of the Scottish Americans were not "bored" but were kicked off their land during the highland clearances.

that they are English?

Just wondering..... because

Bored English families sailed over and colonized the "new world".

These colonies became fed up with strict English rule and high taxes and kicked off and joined together and thought ... **** this lets govern ourselves.

the rest as they say is history...

Please fully star out all swearing in future. Thank you.

oh and of course they are African too

David Starkey's second account, surely?

America. It's like a naughty teenager. I'm sure they'll grow up one day. However saying the are all English is a little silly. Might as well go as far as saying most of the world is English...

The sun never sets on the British Empire.

*God save the king*

You've said that most English people stereotype Americans which is itself perpetuating a stereotype and then compounded it by stating that it is worse in the North of England than the South. TV and film has a lot to answer for in regard to how people are viewed unfortunately and I suspect that is what you and your wife have found.

I'm not questioning your experiences but isn't it just simpler to accept you get idiots in every nation, of every colour, creed, political sympathy, social class or whatever?

I definitely agree with the TV and movie comment.
I also didn't realise that I was stereotyping as well, I said it is worse in the North because we just moved up here (my family live here) and a lot of Northerners are very xenophobic, I mean even I get crap sometimes because I lived in the south for most of my adult life so lost some of my accent (not all).
So even though I was born and raised here I still get crap lol it's funny really.

You're absolutely right though, there are idiots in all walks of life and as I said, I really didn't spot the hypocrisy in my posts - I do now, but it's more difficult to re-read objectively in the heat of the moment.

Thanks for the constructive post.

The only misconception the Americans have about their history is how they say "the puritans landed there to escape religious persecution", when in fact the Puritans landed there to engage in it, since it was a godless land.

Hmmm well this is going to turn our household upside down, considering Im the Brit, and my better half is an American, descended from Israel. In fact, I think I have only ever met one American so far, who has descended from British decent. Everyone I know, tends to come from European or Canadian decent. Those from Europe are from everywhere but England.

Wait until tomorrow when I let her know she is actually the Brit in our relationship now!

Then our king tried taxing everyone and they kicked us out (with the help of the French).

Who can blame them tbh. I wish we could do the same to our government.

Don't really understand the general hatred of Americans in England.

There isn't a general hatred of Americans. Some particular sections of society will probably admit they hate americans, but I'm sure if you pushed them, they'd admit to also hating the people across the street, their family, the colour of grass etc.

I've spent a lot of time working/travelling in many parts of the US. In some cases they live in a different reality to us, which can seem odd, but in someways I prefer it. In general I've found Americans them to be very pleasent and accommodating, if a little bit mental too :D

Is it time to hug yet?
