Do I need 200mbs?

Damnit, did you have to ring through to the special FTTP department? I remember ringing up and they kept saying I could only get ADSL2.

I'm locked in until Dec 2018 but will give it a try from time to time. I definitely wouldn't mind paying £30 for 300Mbps! The next step would be to CAT6 the house...

Pretty sure it was that department i spoke to. It was called BT Infinity 4 i believe.

How are you locked in for so long? :O I believe my contract was only 12 months.

Yeah Infinity 4, they must have stopped the offer then as I couldn't get anyone to budge!

I pressed them for a or a cheaper price and they said they'd do £18 a month if I signed up for 24 months. I've not changed since 2013 when I joined so I didn't mind.

However I'd much rather pay £30 for a higher option.

I might just switch to VM on their 200mbps package for 12 months if they up the prices.

Sorry, you are on FTTP now? Never in a million years would I move to VM from FTTP!

Yeah I am, option 2. Although I only ever get 74 Mbps out of the 80 (or was it 76) that was offered. I always thought actual fibre optic would transfer at what was advertised.

I wouldn't mind moving for a year, then I could get cashback and a deal price that they do for new customers. It would also allow me to get the account in my name, as it's currently in my Mums and you can't change account holder.

Could always switch back if VM are that bad in my area, might miss the upload speed though.

So regular FTTC then? Or have they changed the prices?

Honestly I went from 40 mbit FTTC to 152 mbit VM and it was pretty poor. The only thing it had going for it were the download speeds. Everything else was worse - browsing, streaming, gaming, customer service etc etc.

Nah I'm on the actual FTTP, with the fibre optic cable coming down from the telegraph pole and plugged into the Openreach ONT. I still have the copper phone line wired in too but that's unused as the phone is provided over FTTP.

Maybe it's just the 80mbps package that comes in at 76mbps on FTTP. The higher packages might be fine I guess.

Yeah I worry that VM will be rubbish in respect to that, however that 200MBps Vivid Clear package without any management makes it sound like it'll fare better.

Not if your area is affected by congestion it won't. I'd be going for a higher speed FTTP connection then if you want more bandwidth.

Just to add another perspective I've been on virgin for years and I am currently on the 200mb vivid gamer and it's perfect and has been for years.

All providers have their issues, I know people who left BT, talk talk, etc because of aweful speeds, service, etc.

I would advise you check with other people in your area who have these services and see what they think.

Ah I thought it would override any of that. Last time we were on VM (2005 I suppose?) there weren't any congestion issues. You can always break contract if it's that bad couldn't you? Providing I gave them a chance to fix it.

I broke contract when I was with them in Watford about 5 years ago. Took about 6 months of to-ing and fro-ing to cancel without penalty - although I had to pay to exit the TV and phone contract early!

Against my better judgement I went back with them in 2013 in Gloucester and although I was promised I was in a non congested area and the TBB graphs didn't look too bad, as above, streaming, browsing and gaming was noticeable worse than the previous PlusNet 40Mbit service I had.

There are many people on here who have no issues however I'd rather not take any more chances with them.

I might try PlusNet then just as a switch as they have FTTP trials going on. The only difference I've read is that they might take longer to fix issues or the service isn't as good as BT's but I'm willing to risk it over VM I suppose.

I see what you mean about ISPS, it's all related to your experience with them in the past. I mean VM were OK but the other ISP's I jumped ship to were better VM -> O2 -> BeThere -> BT.

I mean better as in latency and ping, webpage loading to a majority of websites/game servers. I understand the ping depends on where the server is located but if another ISP generally has better connections (pun intended :D) around the internet then it makes it a better choice in my eyes. Obviously download speed and upload counts too but at the time I spent a lot of time gaming so the latency was better.

Well I'm with Zen now and I really would struggle going to anyone else.

47 down and 18 up, 24/7 since it was installed over a year ago.

The only issues I've ever had are caused by me. And looking at that graph I need to update my QOS policy on Steam downloads. :p

I was looking at switching but it seems Zen are pretty much the same price as all the other major FTTC ISPs now.

Look up PlusNet, I know they've had congestions issues with some major change they've recently done. There's a thread on here with details.

OP here - Virgin rang me today about my cancellation over the weekend, I explained I wanted the 100mbs offer for £27 to downgrade from my current 200 But retentions said they couldn't do it, this guy was happy to do it

Bit of a relief really I had visions of a poor fttc connection for a year

Be careful they usually tell you anything over the phone. When your bill comes you may find it's higher than £27 and there is nothing you can do because you agreed to it and signed a new contract no matter how much you protest.

You should have asked him to confirm that in writing or by email before you would agree to it. That way you could fight it if they charged you more.

They emailed me the details and sent a contract to confirm the offer, this was in May 2016, if it was not as agreed I could cancel.

Definitely not. The artificial bottleneck caused by the powerline adapters will probably do you a favour, as it will stop the streaming from 'bursting' to full speed for short periods (e.g. filling a buffer) which might cause some latency spikes.

Yeah I seen that there may be issues, I also looked at Zen but the prices were a bit higher than I'd like.
I've seen that BT are going to increase their prices, and I'm Line Rental Saver'ed until April, I wonder if I can cancel but set my end date in April. They only ask for at least 30 days notice but I'd be giving them way more notice.
