i'm adding a couple of fans to the top of my case (see sig).

and this

i already have the same green one occupying the front drive bays, but if i connect it via molex its a bit noisey(i assume this is cause it runs at full whack?) so its currently hooked into sys 2 fan header on motherboard. the extra 2 will have to be connected to molex adapters, so i guess i need to get a fan controller to go with them so i can turn down the speed a bit to keep them quiet. if this is the case can any1 point me in the direction of a decent cheapish controller. or perhaps spec me quieter fans, need to be the same colour scheme.

thanks in advance

you can always 7v mod the fans.

if you take the 4 pin molex male end on the fan and remove the ground pin (black wire) and push it back into pin 4 on the opposite end of the positive wire in pin 1 the fans will be a lot quieter

Worked a treat on a san ace that was loud as hell

Whats your budget for a fan controler?

not really sure, say 20 quid?

how does that work, what is changing the wiring actually doing? sorry just curious. tho there's be a good chance i'd manage to make summat go boom lol

Tbh from an electronic background I would use the 5V rails on that diagram pins 4 and either 2 or 3 they both go to the same place.

Basically the potencial difference (voltage) is 12V between the 12V and commom the p.d. is 5V between 5V and common so the p.d. is 7V between 12V and 5V. The p.d. would be 24V between say the +12V and -12V.

I would say do the cable mod. Saves some money and you can change it back.

i would do, tho is there any possibilty that doing summat wrong would result in fire or possibly death?? lol

cause believe me if it's possibly to do something wrong then you can be guaranteed that i'm your man :p

Basically voltage supplied is equal to positive voltage-negative voltage

So for a regular fan you have 12v-0v=12v

However by using the 5v rail as ground you end up with 12v-5v=7v

although this is actually close to 6.8v or so once you factor in the fact that its not bang on 12 and 5v actually supplied.

No danger at all I've done it on 5 or so fans without a hitch, hey they we're even plugged in while i did it, I was just putting the ground of the fans 3 pin connector into the molex as theyre a snug fit and I was testing noise and airflow differences.

after a few searches/reads, just wondering would modding the fans to run on 7v have much of a negative effect of the brightness of the fans leds?
